Anatomy Scan Question

I just scheduled my anatomy scan for 3 weeks from today because we will be on vacation the following week and I'm really anxious to know the baby's sex.

I'll be 17 weeks and 5 days...do you think that's ok? The doctor said 18-20 weeks.  Should I just reschedule it for when we get back?

I think that will be fine.  Hope the baby is healthy and cooperates for you!

I was/am in the same situation. DH and I are going away for 3 weeks and of course thats the time I should be getting my A/S. At my last apt, I had brought it up to my dr and asked if there was a way to get it done at 17w3d and they said they would rather wait until I got back since baby is more developed and they can get all the proper measurements.  yes its a longer wait, but I think its best. I'm also working on convincing DH to go for an elective u/s while we are away!

I really don't think being 2 days early will affect the measurements.

@heywhitney I think I'll call and make sure it's ok.  Baby's been measuring big all along too which is why I did it in the first place....hm...

This. I'll spare you the details because it's awful, but this is a super touchy subject this week. Your a/s is to make sure your baby is healthy. Finding out the sex is a bonus. If you're feeling impatient about finding out the sex, schedule an elective. Personally I'd wait until you were back from your trip to have your a/s. That said, your doctor should be able to give you the best advice.

My OB office does it at 17-18 weeks. I think it depends on the office and OB. I was told "if you schedule for 16 weeks 6 days they will send you home and make you reschedule" so my appointment is scheduled for when I will be 17 weeks 4 days. I would call and make sure they aren't going to just send you home because you aren't far enough along.

My comment was not intended to come off as finger wagging, if it did. Like I said, very sensitive subject this week for myself & at least one other member of S'14.

As others said, if I were you I'd just call the OB's office and ask.  I think mine says to do it between 18-20, but they scheduled mine for right around 20.  I think any earlier than that and some of the organs are too small to see and measure properly.

I had my A/S at 16 weeks during my last pregnancy. I asked my OB if I should schedule it closer to 20w, but she wasn't concerned so I went with it.

I just left my OB and she told me they now do the a/s between 20 and 22 weeks because people were going in too early to find out the sex when they should be waiting to get proper measurements. I'd wait.

Your doctors office should know how far along you are....so if there was an issue they prob wouldn't have scheduled it...right??? Anyways..I'm going to have an elective ultrasound separate from my doctor @15 wks so if they can see the sex then why couldn't your doctor??? We went @16 wks with my DD and found out her sex:)

What did your doctor say? I scheduled mine at 19 weeks but they were hesitant to do it that early because they can't necessarily always get good views until 20-22 weeks, and a lot of insurance companies won't pay for a second scan.

I asked my OB at my last appointment when their office does the a/s and she said between 19-20 weeks. It's just their office policy. I just asked for curiosity sake (and because I'm not counting on baby to cooperate at my elective ultrasound to find out sex). And because I feel so out of control of so many things in my life I'd like to know what to expect in the next couple months. I'd say if your OB said it's ok to do it at 17w5d, go for it.

I know some doctors won't do it until 18-22 weeks so they can get a good view on any possible heart defects. I am curious to find out the sex but I rather wait until 21 weeks to get better measurments.

I'm having a level II at the high risk clinic, they won't do them before 19 weeks unless it's for something like a trisomy or down's syndrome.

This! I know you are excited to find out the sex of your baby, but this scan is for so much more than that.  It really is about scanning and measuring to check on the development and growth of your little one.  It's where they try to find out if your little one could have any physically abnormalities along with checking out their organs, as well as other things. 

That really should be much more important than whether your child has a vigina or a penis! Just saying.

The Antepartum Diagnostic Center at my hospital here won't even consider scheduling one before the 20 week mark unless your OB is requesting it to be done earlier.

I think it's better to go later than earlier but double check with your dr.

My office won't do them before 20 weeks.

We go to a MFM office for ours, and they start at 19 weeks, which is when ours is scheduled (well, 20 based on last period, 19 based on dating ultrasound). If you're only going to be on vacation for a week (so back at 19 weeks), I'd reschedule.

Ditto - MFM office, but they'll do 18-20 weeks.. my doc suggested we wait until the 20 week mark to get the most accurate results, not necessarily on finding out the sex, but the rest of the scan.

The perinatiologist I'm going to prefers to do the scan closer to 18 weeks than 20, interestingly.

I was told that my doctor scheduled my a/s based on the measurements of the nt scan. I was measuring almost a week ahead so while my ticker says that it will be early by a few days the growth says that it will be a few days after the 18 week mark. They let me know this after I kicked up a bit of a fuss thinking that it would be too early. Perhaps your doctor does the same?
