Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2 year molars? Sleep help!

Anyone's LO working on their 2 year molars?  Or have they popped through yet?  How did it affect their sleep?  I know...every baby/toddler is different.  We have just had such a long break from teething.  I tried to feel in his mouth, but it doesn't feel swollen back there and I don't feel anything cutting through.

DS has been waking up earlier and earlier in the morning.  He was sleeping consistently from 7pm to 6:40-7am.  This morning he was up at 5:20....would not go back to sleep.  Last night he had trouble falling to sleep (gave him ibuprofen around 7:30), woke up at 9 and I heard him at 1:50am too.

Sleep regression?  teething?  Just a phase??  Ugh.

  • good question, I am wondering if DS is getting his molars as well.  He has been late with his teeth though so that is why I am a little surprised but he hasn't been sleeping great and has diaper rash which he only gets when teething and all other teeth are in.  And he certainly doesn't let me in his mouth.

DS bit my finger so hard last night - I really almost cried.  And then he gave me a kiss because he felt bad.  Those suckers are sharp!

Teething never really affected DS's sleep. He has been working on his 2 year molars and yes they've made him crabby but again, not affecting sleep. And they still haven't broken through the gums.

Kids sleeping patterns change all the time. Sometimes DS wakes up super early for a week and then the next week he sleeps in. Just the way it goes. I just roll with it instead of trying to pin point what is causing it.

For me personally, I can tell when DS is in pain and needs Tylenol/Ibuprofen so I give it accordingly. Otherwise, if he wakes up early ONE day, I just deal with it.

He has been very whiney and clingy lately and his sleep has been disrupted more than just waking up early one day.  (all this week).  So I don't think I jumped the gun on giving him medicine last night.  He's been biting everything and shoving his fingers way back in his mouth...so I have a feeling it is his 2 year molars.

I just worry that he isn't getting ENOUGH sleep.  If he is having trouble falling asleep at night so that he goes to bed later...and then wakes up so early.  He's only getting 10 hours...and his nap during the day is only 1 hr 15min.  I know that sleep patterns change often....I just like answers.  :)

Teething definitely screws with my DD's sleep, but she doesn't get cranky during the day or have the massive drooling I was told to expect. I'm a FTM and I have been so surprised how difficult it can be to know if DD is teething or not.  I thought it would be black & white obvious. I think part of it is that she feels them long before they cut through and she seems pretty sensitive so they can bother her for a long time before there are visual signs.
It sounds like your DS may be feeling something since he's gnawing on everything including his fingers. I like to use the Hylands teething tablets when DD is struggling with teething, until I can see the tooth beneath her gums and then move onto ibuprofen at night if needed.  Hopefully your DS will start to get the rest he needs! :)
  • Thanks @LimaD !  I completely forgot about the Hyland's teething tablets.  I'm going to have to bust those out again!

  • @Nicb13 Thank you!  You're right...if it's only 1 or 2 weeks of not getting enough sleep...that's just the way it goes.  I'm ready for him to go back to sleeping normally!

So did you just give him a later bedtime then?

I'm not downplaying your fear of him not getting adequate sleep because I stressed that too...until DH told me to shut up and calm down ;)

Yes. DS normally went to bed around 7 for a very long time. I noticed he was messing around in his crib for about an hour and falling asleep around 8, so I pushed his bedtime back to 7:30 a few months ago. Still took an hour to fall asleep but wasn't crying so I just realized that he obviously liked the "wind down" time and he was happy so I had to let it go. He now falls asleep by 8:30 each night. He's up at 6:30 pretty much every day and naps for 2 hours, sometimes 3 if I'm lucky.

I would love a 2 hour nap!!  You can't get a lot done in an hour and 15 min!!

Yeah - we've noticed that DS has been talking a lot more as he lays down for bed - and we can hear his crib banging against the wall.  Not quite sure what he's doing in there!  Jumping around?!  Goofball.
