Did I mistake implantation bleeding for a period?

Here's the facts.
-I was TTC for two cycles.
-At the beginning of this cycle I never took a pregnancy test because I got my period, so I thought I obviously I wasn't pregnant. I bled a medium or small amount for five days. Seemed normal to me.
-My basal temp has been a bit higher this cycle that my last cycle and I had six days of high LH leading up to a positive pregnancy test. (Do you get LH surges during pregnancy?)
-March 17 I felt queasy so I took a pregnancy test even though I was at least seven days away from a period. It was positive. I was amazed because it seemed to early to test!
-I've been queasy, fatigued, and a little crampy ever since I suspected I was pregnant, but usually people don't get morning sickness until 6 weeks in!

Did I get pregnant this cycle, or last cycle and mistake implantation bleeding for a period? I'm not scheduled to see the doc for another month and a half because I was assuming I got pregnant this cycle. I don't know how long I've been pregnant!

  • This happened to me. My implantation bleeding with DD was like a light period, so I thought I hadn't gotten pregnant. I was under this assumption until I went for an ultrasound at 18 weeks (or so I thought), and found out that I was almost 23 weeks!

An ultrasound will adjust your dates.

  • It's definitely possible, especially considering the long "LH surge." I could be mistaken, but I always thought LH surges were 1-3 days normally, not a week long, ending in a pregnancy test. PP is right, OPK's detect HCG as well. I'd guess you were pregnant the whole time throughout that long LH surge.

It's impossible to know for sure, but like another PP said, an early ultrasound will clear up date confusion. Typically an u/s done between 8-12 weeks is best for dating the pregnancy, so you could always explain the situation and request that it be done? Especially if you wanted to do 12-week testing and are afraid of missing that window.

    BFP #2 1/15/11, EDD 10/8/11. 10/11 DD1 born!
    BFP #3 12/3/12, EDD 8/16/13. Early m/c 12/11/12

  • It's definitely possible.  I would call your doctor and explain your situation to see if you can see him earlier.  There is certain testing that has to be done at 12 weeks and you'd be cutting it close if you are farther along that you thought.
