High amniotic fluid and cutting carbs?

We had our 3D scan today and while the tech was taking measurements she was asking if I had been told I had GD. I do not have GD. Doc says my amniotic fluid level is high and to cut back on carbs. Anyone else been told something similar?

I googled and that was bad... So I figured I'd ask here instead.

I may call the office tomorrow and get more specifics but of course I didn't ask in office (my nerves get me) and now they are closed.

Re: High amniotic fluid and cutting carbs?

  • In have the same issue. The maternal fetal medicine doctor was concerned about it. But 2 days later when I let with my OB she really wasn't concerned too much no have cut way down on sweets and I try to have a healthy snack or meal every 2 hours. But I don't have GD.

  • My SIL had almost double the normal amount of amniotic fluid with her pregnancy. They kept double checking that she wasn't having twins. She had a normal healthy little boy. I wouldn't worry too much until you talk to your OB.

  • I had a lot of extra fluid with DD. And I did not have GD. We got extra u/s because they were worried about her size, but she was born at a very normal 8lb 0oz. I just had a lot of fluid for whatever reason.

If your OB isn't too concerned, you shouldn't be either.

  • Thanks ladies for the responses. I did double check with doc today. My level number was 21 and they want it under 20 so I'm just barely over. They said they just don't want my fluid levels to continue increasing so that's why they want me to cut out carbs and sugar as much as possible. She said following any low carb plan would work if I needed guidelines. So I'm currently researching Atkins while pregnant (only the maintenance phase). The nurse started naming all my favorite fruits as things to cut out :-( And fruit is what I crave! Oh well. 6 weeks won't be too bad I hope to keep little girl safe and healthy and momma too!
  • I have a higher amount but they said it was a high normal. They haven't told me to do anything different yet.

I had a higher level since week 24 (about 23) and they told me to eat a high protein diet and cut out carbs. By week 31 I was down to 22 which was back in the normal range for that timeframe. I do not have GD either.

This makes no sense at all. The normal range is 5-20. I measured at 23 at a 30w scan, and there was no worry, because it doesn't become a major issue, or so I was told by my Dr, until it is 25 or higher. I had another u/s on Thursday, and the ultrasound technician said she felt like a lot of women were at their fluid peak around 32 weeks and then begin to decline from there. I measured at 19 on Thursday. I eat ALL the carbs. No diet change was even mentioned.

Ive read the "normal" range varies from 5-25. My docs office likes it between 10-20 so probably like with everything it varies by practice/doctor. And since it varies us ladies get lots of different answers/suggestions and can't ever do the same like other ladies. Lol
