Irregular measurements

Hi all first time caller, long time listener ;) I'm 35 and my husband is 40. This is our first baby and they'll be born near our 1st anniversary. My question to u all is whether you've had any measurements of baby that have been irregular. Our baby's chin is measuring small, coupled by the fact that both I and my cousin were born with cleft palates. This has the drs concerned and wanting to do a longer more in depth ultrasound at 18weeks. Can baby catch up? My husband thinks they just have the "family chin". I'm not so convinced.

Re: Irregular measurements

  • I have no experience with this, but I would certainly be concerned based on what your doctor said.  I don't think features like a small chin or big nose are developed enough at this stage to be noticeable on an ultrasound.  I hope you get good news at your 18 week ultrasound though.

  • My grandmother was born with a cleft palate, so I'm considered to be at higher risk for my baby to have it. This is my third baby and my dr. usually just does a 3D ultrasound at 12 and 18 weeks. At the 12 week U/S, the dr. told me she was looking for a receding chin, because that is the only marker they can see when the baby is that small. At 18 weeks they can usually see the actual cleft palate unless is it only a small hole on the roof of the mouth. So it sounds like your baby has a marker for cleft palate, but it is definitely just a marker at this point. They should be able to give you more info at your next U/S:) Fingers crossed for you!
