Re: NFP PP

  • We used it after baby 1 and again after #2 when hormonal BC caused issues post baby (never had issues pre- baby) and IUD insertion failed. We used condoms as back up. For the first year and a half, we were very cautious and careful about tracking everything and using condoms if in doubt. Then we got lazy. I wasn't temping- just paying attention to cervical mucous (not a good idea!). DH was also a slacker in the condom dept. So really, it was no surprise when #2 came along. After her, we thought we were done but DH never got his vasectomy. Pretty much exactly the same timing... After a year and a half we got lazy. Had a couple scares... Would think that would have sent DH in for the V? But nope. Then sure enough... BFP #3. Obviously, I'm thrilled with our lil oops but I made sure to get that tubal during the c/s ;-). Clearly we cannot be trusted for NFP... See exhibit B & C.

  • We use NFP. I haven't started it pp yet. We haven't had sex yet, but until I get my period or symptoms we will be backing up with condoms.  Mainly because if I get pregnant now, it could be life threatening. That being said, we did talk to our priest about using condoms as a back up. He understand why and doesn't seem to have an issue with it.

  • We use NFP, started after DS. However even though I was Breastfeeding every hour or two, bedsharing, babywearing and the whole deal, I got a cycle 8 weeks pp. So we backed up with condoms consistently until after a year, and then only during my fertile periods.
This time around, I absolutely want to wait at least a year to ttc again, so I will start charting and temping after that first cycle pp.

However my reasons for NFP are not religious, more so because I don't want a hormonal birth control, nor a foreign object inside my uterus:)

  • I was fortunate to have no PP period for 18m after #1 (it actually came back following his first overnight which I was not happy about for many reasons and that was really the icing on the cake lol). Since I was night nursing and never got around to temping again PP, I only charted CM and we were fine avoiding for the whole time with no period, and a few months while I was cycling until we decided to just see what happens, and I got BFP.

I also was very experienced charting prior to conceiving and my body was very regular with it's signs so I didn't feel like the lack of temping was an issue in terms of knowing when to avoid. It was really during the 6-12m that I felt the most "stressed" because I was worried LAM was not dependable yet I wasn't having fertile signs (because I wasn't fertile lol). After LO was 12m, I got less concerned about a surprise BFP.  We never used condoms JIC, although we talked about it we just never got to the store lol.

FWIW there are entire NFP methods based on CM alone, so IMO temping isn't vital since it only confirms ovulation occurred after the fact, it's not as helpful for TTA.
