Re: NTTC35R: (kid stuff) DS's mouse just died

  • Loosing a pet is sad. Let your son burry him in a special place in the backyard so he can visit him anytime he likes. We did this when one of our lizards died last year and it helped my son.

  • Losing a pet is always hard on kids. It's normally the first time someone they love dies. I remember when DSD's rat died, I'd only met her once before, but she curled up on my lap and fell asleep after crying her eyes out about it.

  • It's a tough thing to deal with. Be honest, let his grieve (it's not just a mouse, after all, it's a friend), and remember that how he would deal isn't necessarily the same as an adult would.

When our cat died, both kids processed it differently. They cried - DD moved on more quickly, but also came back to it more often. DS grieved longer, but only once. It was two years ago, and DD still talks about missing the cat. DS doesn't mention her much, but will talk about how much he liked it when she slept in his bed.
  • Awww sorry to hear about Otis. I'm sure when the time comes you will have said the right thing. How is he today after you told him?

    ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

  • He was hysterically devastated. :(  He immediately burst into loud, wailing tears then got mad at both of us, ran down the hall to his room where he continued sobbing, while throwing his stuffed animals.  He started screaming that he wanted us to take him to get another one right now, but we told him he had to wait until Saturday.  It was awful.  He cried for almost an hour straight so I let him pick what we were having for dinner and made it for him.  Right before dinner DH suggested that maybe we should just go ahead take him out to get a new one.

We ended up doing that after we ate.  He picked out an adorable, little, grey and white dwarf hamster that he named Bilbo, but as we knew it wouldn't, it didn't really make him any less sad about Otis, but it's a start.  It was, and continues to be, a good lesson in death and loss and grieving but, man, it was painful from our side.

Oh that breaks my heart to read. Its such a hard thing to experience the first time and every time really.

Im glad he has a new friend to help him feel better. Otis Mcsqueakerton was absolutely adorable and Im sure he will always have fond memories of him.

  • Thanks for asking.  He wanted nothing to do with the  "funeral" on Sunday when we finally buried him in the yard and still doesn't want to talk about it. But, over all, he's doing much better.  The new hamster helps.
Glad to hear he's doing better!
