Hives?

Any mommas out there experiencing/have experienced hives? I had a few bug bite looking bumps on my leg yesterday, woke up at 2:30 in the morning because I was so itchy and found my legs, hips, butt, elbows, neck and face covered in hives. I've done some Dr. Googling and found it can be related to changes in hormones and could potentially be linked to twins. The nurse recommended I take bennadryl so I'm home hoping to feel (and look) better soon. Just curious if anyone out there was in the same boat as me. I'm currently 6w6d.

Re: Hives?

  • I had hives one day last week. They came and went twice in that day! I did not use any new products or eat any new foods. Yeah so- annoying and weird!

  • So strange you mention this. A week before I got a positive HPT I had to go to the doctor my whole body broke out in hives. She told me it was a reaction to penicillin which I've never have had I'm the past. Think it was just early pregnancy
  • I'm getting acne, but no hives...yet.

  • My belly is breaking out in some kind of rash,  but I think thats from me trying to use Bio Oil to see if I liked it.

I didn't mind it,  but apparently my skin hates it.

  • A week before I got my BFP I broke out in hives/bug bite looking rash on my lower back, hips, and inner arms. I googled until I found a picture that looked almost identical to what I was experiencing. looked like something called Pityriasis Rosea which is more common in pregnant women (I got my BFP the next morning at 10dpo after doing the research) and the rash has no known cause. It has been linked with increased risk of m/c in first tri, though...Not to alarm anyone). It will usually fade on it's own over several weeks but can last up to 4 months. Mine has virtually disappeared on my arms but still shows up on my lower back after a shower or bath. Anyway, I'm obviously not a doc, but you may want to mention it to your ob/gyn. HTH!

  • I started getting hives when I was 6 months PG with my 2nd. Not sure if it was triggered by hormones or what, but I am still getting them...yep, chronic hives (assume to be caused by chemical sensitivities but they never found a for sure reason for them) and it's been almost 5 years. it's way better now, but I'm here to answer any questions about hives in general if you have them! ;)

FWIW, if they get worse or are unbearable, you're ok to take benadryl, claratin and zyrtec. I had to take all 3 round the clock (had to set my alarm to take benadry every 4 hours) while PG w/ DD2 just to keep them bearable. And I was also on steroids :/ As much as I freaked out over it and taking all those meds, DD2 is perfectly healthy.

Hope it doesn't come to that for anyone else! And hope you feel better soon.

  • Thanks @bim38106!  I was in shock when I saw all those bumps over my body--especially since it's a pregnancy symptom I had never heard of before!  I've been tested for allergies before and know I'm crazy allergic to all types of trees, weeds and grasses but being allergic to our baby was a new one to me ;)

I was hesitant to take Benadryl and harm the baby, but at the same time I knew I couldn't go without taking it because I was insanely itchy.  I'm so glad to hear you say you'd been on meds with no side effects to your sweet kiddos.  Have you experienced hives with this pregnancy?

  • @LittleLadyAKS, it's definitely nerve racking to take meds while PG. And I don't know about you, but having hives and not knowing the cause and I just kept getting them....SUPER stressful!!!

I'm still getting them. It's been daily for almost 5 years. I usually wake up with them on my hands and butt, sometimes on my face in the evening. But I can't complain now because when I first started getting them, it was so bad I could barely function and meds were barely helping to keep them bearable. I went from taking Benadryl every 4 hours round the clock + claratin in the morning + zyrtec at night along with a steroid pill, to now I can take 1/2 a zyrtec every 3-4 days and I only get deep ones in my hands (can't see them but it feels like arthritis and swelling in my joints). I was told they would eventually just "fizzle out" and that seems to be what is happening. I had allergy tests done, every type of bloodwork you can imagine to check for anything from allergies to autoimmune issues....nothing. I guess it's not as uncommon as it seems either :/ But anyway, chronic may not even be what you have! I really hope they go away soon for you!
