No gestational sac at 5 weeks?!

I went to the dr Friday and today (same thing both days). We did an transvaginal ultrasound and he couldn't see a gestational sac! I should be (around) 5 weeks 2 days today ( my LMP was February 9th. He said my uterine wall lining was thick, he found a cyst on my right ovary (left was normal) but no gestational sac! We did blood both days (still waiting on results)! Has this happened to anyone?? I also just had a baby in Nov ( I know, I know! I was on birth control so not sure why I got pg again, on top of breastfeeding). I have had over 15 positive pregnancy tests (starting last Thursday night), all getting more clear & faster by the day. Would love if anyone else could tell me their story of this happening, scared of a tubal/miscarriage. :( Thanks!

  • It's too early to see anything on an ultrasound, so don't worry.
Your blood work should give you more answers than an ultrasound could right now.

I like your pee-stick selfie, by the way...

  • Why the heck has your Dr given you an ultrasound at 5 weeks? Sounds like a sure fire way to cause a heck of a lot of worry. I'd shop around if I were you and find someone who knows what they're doing. IMO they shouldn't do ultrasounds before 7 weeks unless medically necessary.

    Congrats btw!

Thank you for the replies. My dr is a great dr and he did tell me that it probably too early to tell, he did an ultrasound because I have a history of miscarriages. Also, my son was born premature so they want to know as soon as possible if I am indeed pregnant again. Especially so soon after having my son, certain precautions and medicines need to be given.
  • Agree with PPs (but the more people telling you the same thing, the more likely you are to know it is true). Definitely not time to worry. I had a cyst on my ovary at 7 weeks. It was gone at 12, perfectly normal. My OB generally doesn't do ultrasounds before 7-8 weeks. Less than 5 weeks is way too early. I too wonder what your OB was thinking.

  • Before becoming a substance abuse counselor, I was a sonographer. You should , or rather you can see a gestational sac as early as 5 weeks. When your hcg reaches 1500 you should see a sac and above 2500 a fetal pole.
It's not uncommon at all to do a transvaginal US on a new pregnant lady to date the pregnancy. If nothing shows, to repeat.

  • I worked in hospital so most of the the time they were not routine.
When doing clinical's they would schedule generally week(s) apart. For some women US vaginally can cause irritation. And bleeding alone is not always a bad thing during pregnancy so not always a reason to do US.

When dating they generally use measurements from tail to rump and this is between 8-12 weeks. Not always..really depends on your dr and history etc...

  • I had the same thing happen last week. The doctor then checked my levels and said it was just too early to be able to see anything because my levels were in the 950s. They doubled in two days just as they were suppose to (around 1900). He said you cant even see anything until the levels are in the 2000s to 2500s and that there was nothing to worry about. I have another ultrasound on April 1st.
