Mastitis??

Seemingly out of nowhere today, my left breast started feeling very tender to the touch, almost bruised. It feels firm and full, despite continuing to nurse and adding in a pumping session to try and drain it more completely. I feel generally kind of "blah", and have had body chills off and on. However, I do not have a fever and it doesn't hurt to nurse. Is it possible to have mastitis without a fever, or could it be something else?

Re: Mastitis??

  • It's definitely possible to have mastitis without a fever. I've had it 6 times and only had a fever 2 of those times. I usually felt run down (like the flu) and had a red area on my breast. I think it can present in different ways for different people. If you're not feeling well and have soreness, I would call your OB. Hope you feel better soon! Mastitis is the worst!

  • That's kind of what I was afraid of :( thanks ladies, I'll call in the morning!
  • I hope you are feeling better already. What I did to get rid of mastitis w/o antibiotics was pumping at the end of each BF session until the boob felt less full, BF as much as possible, change position of LO so that he sucks from all ducts, take warm showers and massage the breast. I hope you get rid of it soon because at some point it hurts so much!
