Cloth Diapering

Tide? I'm kinda confused...

So, when I was on the board three years ago it was unheard of for anyone to recommend using Tide and RNG was the best thing since sliced bread.  Please elaborate how things have changed.  What kind of Tide?  Is this diaper specific?  Dawn was also the preferred method of stripping and I thought I saw on a post the other day that is not the case anymore.  I'm beginning to feel that all my research three years ago with ds is obsolete today!

TIA

  • Dawn should be used to spot treat something like rash cream on the diapers. Detergent buildup should be taken care of by hot water strips with no detergent and changing your routine to address the problem in the first place.

The best advice I got before I started CDing was KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid. Cloth doesn't have magical properties, it's cloth. It catches poop and pee and should be washed accordingly. I never understood how 1 tablespoon of any detergent could effectively clean human waste. I use Tide in the recommended amount and my diapers are great. No issues here. More and more manufacturers are jumping on the "any detergent" (as long as there's no fabric softener) bandwagon because it is, after all, just cloth.

  • The reason some people use less than the recommended amount is because most detergent companies recommend way too much. You can get away with a lot less on your clothes, too.

And for some of us, our load of diapers is way smaller than a regular load of laundry.

I admit to using less Tide on my regular laundry too just because I found it wasn't necessary for getting it cleaned....besides, if you use 1/2 the recommended amount and get 2x the number of loads the manufacturer doesn't make as much profit; so no reason for them to recommend a smaller, equally effective amount.

  • as a good student of MK's....

The other advantage of using less Tide in the wash is less rinses are needed to get it all out.

  • I read abut Dawn stripping when I first started researching, I can't remember if it was on this board or somewhere out there on the interwebz.  I use tide and never had a problem though.
