Babies on the Brain

FFS this shit is getting ridiculous.

edited March 2014 in Babies on the Brain
Allie came gone from school upset the leprechaun did not come to our house yesterday. Little Susie got silly putty and gold coins. Little Johnny got a Nerf gun and chocolate gold coins. Little Billy got gold coins and lucky charms.

Come the fuck on people! I refuse to buy into this one. Little Allie got jack shit and almost got told there is no Santa after the 15 min lets be sassy with mom about this conversation.

Re: FFS this shit is getting ridiculous.

  • I didn't do ANY of them growing up and I was just fine. Sure, we celebrated holidays, but in the traditional way, not with santa and bunnies. I fully accept that I'm in the minority there. I've always had a strong aversion to clowns, people in animal costumes, even dolls. I watched a lot of Twilight Zone lol. And FWIW, I've NEVER heard of the leprechauns thing either.

  • Nope. Not a thing. We did Santa and the Easter Bunny. The tooth fairy for a little while (not even all baby teeth, just the first few). Maybe some Valentine's candy.

A Nerf gun, really? No. I don't know if this is its fault, but I'm blaming Pinterest.

St. Patrick's and Valentine's Days were never a 'wake up and see what someone brought' holiday when I was a kid, and it won't be in our house either.  If the leprechaun came and turned the milk green, we got lucky.  So far, school celebration is enough for DD and I hope it stays that way.  Santa, Easter Bunny, Paci Fairy, and Tooth Fairly are enough!  Don't even get me started on the ^&$%#& Elf on a Shelf!

Haha! We wore green and took a picture. I think the most we have ever done is made green pancakes. I am definitely a "slacker mom" and am perfectly fine with that. :)

ETA: We do Santa, bunny, and will probably do tooth fairy. Way more than enough.

  • I've done Santa, the Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. That's enough.
  • I don't really even want to do Santa or the Tooth Fairy, much less leprechauns.  We still haven't come to an agreement about Santa, especially since we celebrate Christmas with the ILs and BIL/SIL's kids have Santa.  I've got a few months (and then some) to think about it, I guess.

  • I remember this crap from when I was in the 1st & 2nd grade. Someone told me the damn leprechauns come and leave shit on the stairs.

I checked those damn stairs every five minutes. Nothing. I distinctly remember the disappointment...and lived to tell about it.

I think the Pinterest world we live in is destroying humanity. Or its certainly leading to the pussification of America's youth. I once got a mug filled with candy for valentine's day. It was a nice treat, but that's it.

Santa is all we got...the Easter bunny stopped showing up at some point, too...my parents still put on an Easter egg hunt for us, and yes, I understand that I may be too old for that at 30, but damn, I'll be upset when that jig is up!

  • my husband grew up with his mom messing up the house/causing mischief the night before st. patrick's day because of the "Leprechauns." He has really fond memories of that so we'll probably keep up the tradition. Plus, it's fun and not just materialistic.

    Yes, definitely ridiculous!
what's next? Uncle Sam sneaking in on the 4th of July to leave presents? (that would be creepy)
  • I have never heard of this. Totally ridiculous. But this convo about gifts and holidays made me recall an old memory from a valentines day when I was a kid. My mom called me into the kitchen and had some tissue paper covering something. She lifted it up to reveal a small package of tiny dinosaur figures (I loved dinosaurs when I was younger) and I was ecstatic. I have no idea what made her do that because valentines day was never a gift day for us but I was so surprised, that memory always sticks with me.

  • I love holidays, but I am lazy.  I do make sure my kids have themed outfits because it's fun.  We painted J's nails green, but I draw the line at presents for every damn thing.

  • When I was a nanny we made them milk green with food coloring and maybe green pancakes.  That was it.

I didn't do anything special for E.  I put a scarf I bought a few years ago at the dollar store on her, plus a cheap plastic hat that we had from years ago also and took a picture then took it off.

  • When I was a kid we each got one gift from Santa (usually a toy), candy in stocking and a board game for the family from Santa that's it. Easter we got a chocolate bunny and my dad made a huge mess of the house with mini eggs all over. Valentines day we got a bag of cinnamon hearts and St Pats my dad usually made green eggs and ham for dinner. I plan to do all of those things the same.

I have to say the first Christmas I spent with DH's family I was shocked. They all got, clothes, games, I tunes cards, other gift cards, chocolate and other "stuff" from santa...they were 14,17,19 and 22....I didn't have words. Then his youngest brother spent the rest of Christmas day asking when they could go to the mall to exchange a sweater he got for another color because he didn't like it!!!! I spent my entire day trying not to smack him!

Since we don't see his family anymore I don't this we will have an issues just doing it the simple way I was raised with. DH is very on board with it.

Holiday spending and "traditions" have gotten out of hand...big time...and I hate the elf on the shelf, he is creepy!!!!

  • We had green bagels on St. Patrick's Day.  My Mom did buy us a little present for Valentine's Day and did so this year for my baby.
  • Santa and Toothfairy are enough for us. :)
