TSA/Full-Body Scanners While Pregnant?

Re: TSA/Full-Body Scanners While Pregnant?

  • Because, as GI Joe said, knowing is half the battle...the millimeter wave scanners bounce low-energy radio waves off your body. Millimeter-wave scanners use a type of microwave radiation — it’s right next to police radar-gun emissions on the electromagnetic spectrum. The science write ups that I read state that this type of radiation cannot harm DNA, rendering it safer than backscatter.

I hesitate to call it completely safe, because God knows how many other things our moms and grandmothers thought were safe that have now proven to be less than ideal for pregnancy.

I agree with @ElTrain5 that there is no good reason to fret over a pat down and even if TSA is rude, it's just a minor inconvenience. My apologies if I increased your concern, it was intended to provide additional clarity/info!

  • I didn't even realize I could opt for a pat down. They told me the scanners were approved for pregnant women when I asked so I went through it. I'll opted for the pat down when I fly next week.
The TSA "approves" them for pregnant women, but I guarantee if you asked them to provide you with substantiation of that they'd give you a blank stare.
