Baby Showers

Am I being an ass?

I posted a few weeks ago about baby shower games for a "high tea" themed baby shower.  Long story short-- I asked the Gma to be if she needed help with the shower-- she asked me to plan the games.  I hate games, but MTB loves them.  I live in NY and am travelling to Fla for the shower, so transportability is an issue.

I decided to call the MTB and see what she thought were good games/ activities.  Turns out she likes the super cheesy embarassing games like guessing baby food flavor, melted choc bar in the diaper, measure the belly, craft activities etc.

BSB-- I can't bring myself to plan these games.  I am doing Bingo, a "guess how many" game and something like this (and even this one is out of my comfort zone)

Am I being an ass- since I am clearly doing the opposite of what MTB wants?

While I don't feel that transportability should really be a big issue (FL has stores that sell baby food!), at the same time, that can be your excuse.  Due to travel/timing of the shower, yhou had to take care of everything in NYC.

I will say, too, that a "high tea" shower just doesn't really "go" with the games she likes.

    LOL!

I am staying with MTB and am not renting a car so I feel a little funny asking her to drive me around while I buy supplies for her baby shower games.  So I feel like I would have to have everything set up before I arrive.

Maybe a little bit, but I don't blame you and it's not like it's a big deal--not going to make or break the shower, that's for sure.  The dirty diaper game seems like enough of a concession to me.

  • I couldn't bring myself to do that kind of game either, so I think you're fine.

The "measure the belly" thing doesn't require much in the way of set up.  Maybe you could have that in reserve?  If she looks disappointed, you can bust it out, but skip it if the party seems to be going well?
Yeah-- that's a fair concession.  I did see a a "measure the belly" game at Michael's that I might pick up just in case.

  • Honestly yes you are being an ass. Is this your baby shower? Oh right it's hers. Suck it up and make the MTB happy. Wtf is so wrong with guessing baby food and measuring her belly?

LOL- yes, I feel like an ass!

It just seems so undignified? We aren't kids either (we're 34-- not sure if that makes it better or worse).

I fully admit to having a pole up my butt when it comes to baby shower games.

  • We've always just used crepe paper for "measure the belly." It's not a gross game and there are few tools required, so I'd probably just go with that.

  • the MTB probably doesn't know of any other games than the...kinda tacky...games she mentioned. There are tons of fun and appropriate games out there! Don't worry about doing the games she mentioned, just pick and plan games you think will be fun and everyone will enjoy. good luck!

  • The party is not for you--suck it up and plan a couple of games. Measuring the belly and don't say baby take no prep. Instead if candy bars in diapers you could have people about baby food (tape over label on baby food jar).

Sorry to revive a thread from a few days ago, but wanted to chime in on this. SIL's shower was yesterday. The hostess had 2 games that we played and I think would fit your needs (easy transportability and nothing gross/tacky). The first was 20 questions based on nursery rhymes. Things like "Rub a dud dub, who were the 3 men in the tub?" and "where did the spider go when the sun came out?" The second was a line or two from six different kids books and you had to name the book, example "I love you across the river and over the hills,' said Big Nutbrown Hare." The hostess said she found them on Pinterest, I believe.
