Running (walking) Shoes

I have always had Nike sneakers. Most recently the Nike Free...which look nice, but have resulted in shin splints and sore calves. I'm not in tip top shape, but I walked about 3-4 miles at a pretty leisurely pace. I think it's my shoes.

Any recommendations on good sneakers that won't cost me a bundle? Looking to spend about $100. I've heard Asics are good but most shoes are a horrifying electric style. I know I shouldn't really care about that, but there is nothing flashy about me...I'd like it to remain that way - walking shoes included.

TIA!!!

  • These are the types I'd like to avoid:

  • @Bliz1712 - Thanks! I had a pair of New Balances in college. I liked them, but didn't use them for anything more than walking to class, etc. It's not like I'm signing up for an Iron Man tomorrow, but I'd like to get into routine walking for a bit of exercise.

There are just so many choices!!!!

    How are you feeling??

  • I have Asics and love them! Check DSW and Kohls for more muted styles. Plus Kohls always has great coupons.

  • I was fitted at a running store and they paired me up with some brooks. Best exercise shoes I've ever had. They were like $120 I believe. I recommend going to a running store to be fitted. It really helped me a lot. (I mostly speed walk, I don't run)

@punkyshoester Thanks for asking.  I feel good although I had a WTF moment on Monday.  Only 35 days left and it's definitely harder this time around.  I feel huge, where last time I didn't.  I don't know how I can get any bigger but I'm sure I will.  Sleeping is getting harder.  And I had a bladder infection last week that caused contractions, so I spent some time at L&D.  I'm anxiously counting down the days.
It must be hard chasing a toddler while pregnant. I give all the pregnant ladies so much credit! Bladder infection sounds horrible - glad everything is better with that. It must be hard because I'm sure you feel like you have a lot to prepare for, getting ready for two...but you want to enjoy the time you've got with Hanna. I have always heard that it is easier the second time 'round...and I think Peg's thread is evidence of that - all the moms on the board (yourself included) seem like fantastic mom's. You will do great.

  • @reinedecajun - memory foam on ma feet sounds heavenly!

Thanks to all for the suggestions! Maybe it would just be best to go to a store and get fitted. I don't know what my feet do when I walk so I could likely use some expert advice. I just imagined going into the store in my ((uppity)) town and them telling me what shoe would be best suited for my feet and then they would be all "That will be $500 dollars...now...and you look like a vagabond, so don't come back."

  • Lol @punkyshoester‌ I got fitted at a snails pace which is an uppity running store here in So.Cal, most the shoes range from $60-$180. They do have you walk or jog on front of them and they test your arch. I roll in when I walk so they paired me with some shoes that helped support that. GL!

I used to love New Balance but then I tried a pair of Asics on at DSW one day and there was no turning back. They are the gel ones and it's seriously like walking on a pillow. Amazing. Hands down the best pair of running shoes I've ever worn. They were over $100 though, maybe $120... I can't remember exactly how much. But they are worth every penny. I also use them to run with.
Oh and they aren't those bright flashy colors, thank god. they are mostly white with a bit of grey and orange.
  • Thanks everyone!
