Is Nellie's the best non-Tide detergent for CDs?

Is Nellie's the best non-Tide detergent for CDs?

  • I don't think there is going to be a straight answer to that. It is a matter of personal preference, and the type of water you have.

I should have known better than to post such a general question.  Once I get the itty bits down for a nap I will fill you all in on the details as to what I am looking for and what my prob is.

  • I have a HE FL with hard water and use prefolds/workhorses/flats.  I have been using Rockin Green Hard Rock.  For the most part I have been lovin it.  I like the subtle fragrance, neither one of my girls react to it, and it seems to get the diapers clean.  However, the stinkies creep up on me every couple weeks- they get pretty stinky as they are peed on and the wet bag/pail gets stinkier.  To fix the prob I will do a soak in the Funk Rock, my regular wash routine, and some extra rinses (in addition to my normal extra rinse).  That takes care of the odor but it will creep back up on us soon again.  I am not sure if that is normal or if a different detergent would prevent the stink altogether.  The problem has been better since I switched from Classic Rock to Hard Rock.  But I have seen no difference adding Calgon.  So I figured trying out a different detergent might be beneficial.  I do not want to use Tide.  I tried Tide powder and could not stand the smell and seemed to make the stink worse.  Nellie's seems like it has a good reputation.  So that takes us back to my initial question.

I don't have any personal experience with Nellies, so I can't help much, but I do know RG is notorious for stink issues so you are on the right track looking for a new detergent.

  • Yep, I agree with MrsH, RNG is notoriously bad.  You could try Nellie's, but really it is just going to depend on your water/waster/whatever.  I see you have a toddler.  Are you soaking the overnight diapers?  Sometimes that pee can make everything reek terribly.  Also, are the only smelly in the bag or do they stink when you take them out of the wash/as soon as they're peed in?  What's your wash routine like?
That's what I am wondering...is if it's my wash routine or detergent.  Currently I warm rinse/drain/spin, hot heavy duty cycle w/ 2 scoops RNG, extra rinse cold.  The last couple of weeks or so I have been adding Calgon to pre-rinse and wash cycles.  I watch the machine and there seems to be enough water and tumbling.  They smell fantastic coming out of the washer and dryer.  They just start to get funky smelling (after saturated with pee) about 2 weeks after using the Funk Rock.  My 14 mo. old's large prefolds are the biggest culprit probably because those are the hardest (out of my diapers) to get clean.  I soak her ON dipes (in just water) and also spray out her nap dipes and poos (even when they are ploppable).  So what do you think?  Should I try a different detergent?  Or is there something I am missing in my wash routine?
  • I think your wash routine looks pretty normal. And since you're using natural fiber diapers, those should be relatively easy to clean.

Which leads to detergent being the likely issue. It seems like RnG and All F&C are almost always the culprits behind the 'why do my diapers stink?' posts.

Though I am primarily a Tide user, I have used and would recommend Country Save.

  • I have terrible wash problems and finally landed on Nellies and it works great. Your wash routine seems fine.
