Job Offer- Vacation time at current position

I just accepted a job offer and start April 7th.  I have 74 hours of vacation to use at my current job- should I just ask for the money for the vacation time or should I use it?  We'd like to take a family get away before I start the new job.  Not sure which way to approach so anything would be helpful fellow WM's.

If YH can get away from work also, why not use it? Taking some down time and unwinding together as a family before you jump into a new job sounds like a great idea to me.
Agree here....I would use it. Would be nice to get some time off before jumping into something new.

  • Check your company handbook. I know ours says that you can not use vacation time during your 2 weeks notice, but they do pay it out in your final paycheck. I guess it also depends on your job- do you give 2 weeks or do they walk you out immediately?

If you can get the time off, I say go for it. If you give two weeks' notice, you still have almost a week off before you start your new job anyway.
I'm losing my job at the end of April, and have only used 3hrs of PTO so far this year so that I can just "take vacation" at the end instead. Gives me more time with my kiddo before having to start something new. :)
  • If your company allows you to take it during your last 2 weeks, I would because in some cases, you don't get full pay if you cash out your vacation days.
This, we only get 1/2 paid vacation if we don't use it. so I echo the others to check your employee handbook before giving notice!

  • Thanks everyone! I put in my notice and asked for the time off instead of a payout and was granted my request. I'll enjoy almost 2 weeks home with my DD before I start the new position.
