Cloth Diapering

October '14 cloth

There is a poll going at my new BMB and after a day 38% of the moms who answered are planning on using cloth. I was surprised and pleased how high that number was!
:-h hi to any Oct '14 moms who are venturing over here!

I wouldn't be surprised if that number goes up as October approaches. If you had asked me in the very beginning, I probably would have said disposable and I feel like more clothers keeps showing up in my May group. You guys should ask again in August.

This is me too. Now I'm another May CD Momma and I got an IRL friend to start CDing her 8 month old!

And although I've only been prepping, I was able to use some of my new found CD skills to jellyroll a papertowel into a baby doll diaper for DD ;-)  Hopefully I will have time to sew her a few baby doll diapers this weekend because she's starting to ask for diaper changes!!

  • Hi @mrshudson618!

I really want to cloth diaper and H is on board. My problem right now is that I absolutely cannot afford an entire stash of new diapers, I have no idea which ones I will like the best, and the only place I've been able to find a variety of used diapers in my area is on Craigslist. The supply is sporadic at best.

Hopefully I'll be able to have a look at some of the craigslist diapers soon. I just can't justify buying without touching first since I've never used a cloth diaper in my life.

  • @Greenmood‌ is there a local CD store or natural parenting store where you can at least see and touch some diapers to get an idea of what you want? There are good other non-local places to but used, like diaper swappers and even eBay.

And remember, you don't have to buy a stash all at once. You could buy one diaper a week or two from now until October. The savings in the long run will be worth it!! Do you have any idea what type of diapers you want to start with? Ask us lots of questions, we want to help!

I lucked up and found a FB swap page for a local group of CDing mamas. I bought 6 NB AIOs, 2 prefolds, and a ton of doublers this morning for $50. In addition to the prefolds and covers I've bought new and used, plus a few new diapers that I'll pick up, I think I'll have a really big NB stash for about $150.

With DS1, I got a lot of gift certificates to Target and BRU. I wound up buying a lot of typical baby gear (swing, bouncer, bedding) on consignment to save money, and that freed up my giftcards to buy my OS CD stash.

  • @Greenmood, you can also register for cloth diapers on amazon and some cloth diaper sites, as well as babies r us and target, although they have smaller selections. If someone throws you a shower you could get some as gifts?

We're going to drive to the cities probably next weekend to scope out some baby gear and I will make it a point to stop in a CD store. Everyone I've asked has really recommended finding a store and touching/trialing lots of brands.

I have no idea what I want to start with, but I want to make it as easy as possible for my husband in the beginning so that he stays with me on this. A buddy of his has 2u2 and both are in cloth, so he knows it's possible to CD without a huge fuss. And our baby will have to go into daycare 2-3 days per week starting at about three months, so something daycare friendly?

ETA: Ooh, I like the idea of registering for some. TY.

Pockets or All in Ones are going to be the most dad and daycare friendly. (A lot of daycares will only take a pocket or All in one), but flats or prefolds and covers are the most budget friendly. Alva's and Kawaii's are two brands that make pockets that are usually highly recommended for the cost. With either of those two brands you could get a one size stash for under $200 new. If you are going to be on maternity leave for a while it is possible that you could do a cheaper nb stash that might not be DC friendly, like prefolds and covers, but alva and kawaii both have NB sizes too. While it might slightly more expensive, it is  a good idea to try different types instead of going all in with on brand or type.

And do keep an eye on craigslist, you never know what treasures you might find. Just recently I got 9 thirsties AIOs for $4 apiece.

This time around I'm starting out with cloth. With my daughter I didn't discover how some cloth was until she was about 4 months. Most of my stash is pockets with some Flip diapers but I'm going to try out some flats to start this time around.

  • I didn't even consider cloth until I saw a bunch of people posting on my BMB about it.  I decided on a whim to look up the youtube videos... and realized that it didn't look too complicated.

Thank goodness for the Bump!  Otherwise I'd have had a lot more poop explosions to deal with!  And it's saved me a ridiculous amount of money... esp since I don't have to buy diapers for this LO!
