Cloth Diapering

Wash oopps

Wee little problem.  I did a load of diapers, washed and dried as usual.  Then I did a load of laundry and while taking that load out and found a hand warmer wedged in the washer.  One of those things you stick in your mitt and it magically heats up your hand.

So...I narrowed it down to being in the wash in the load before the diapers when a mitt went through the wash.  Meaning, it was in there for the whole diaper wash.

I just threw them all back in the washer for a hot wash cycle with no soap.  Should I do a cycle with soap?  Full wash routine.  A bunch of hot rinses?

It was "Gabbers" brand and the website says they are: Odorless
Disposable
Safe
Nontoxic, nonflammable
Environmentally friendly

Any thoughts?  I will keep running hot washes for now!  Luckily I don't need the diapers anytime soon as my daughter will be in disposables with desitin for a good 4-5 days due to a milk intolerance and my stupidly having a slice of cheese causing yet another open wound rash.

Re: Wash oopps

  • Was the hand warmer busted open or anything?

  • Loading the player...
  • Nope.  Fully intact...just in the washer sloshing around the whole time.

  • Then I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Maybe it's just me, but I would probably just either give them an extra rinse (no detergent) or call it good and use them.

  • Ok!  I just had visions of her heating up her little bum every time she pees or something funny.  I have no clue how those hand warmers work!

I will do a few hot rinses just to be safe!

  • The chemicals in it react to air to heat up and after awhile the chemical gets all used up/finishes reacting. It was probably long used up by the time it got to the wash. I'd imagine that it is probably inert after use since you can just throw them away. The only thing on the dipes might be a tiny amount of residue/ash/used up chemical stuff so I would imagine that they were fine after the first wash and will definitely be fine after any future washes.

  • No, usually the hand warmers are sealed in plastic and when you open they start to react to air. At least, that's the only kind I've ever seen.

  • It kind of looked like a tea bag.  A closely woven mesh sac with something inside.  In my mind the water was going through what ever was inside and into the washer.  That said, since it was supposedly environmentally friendly and chemical free and all that then I guess it would have little impact on the dipes.  I just panicked at the thought of having washed the diapers with something in it then making her wear them next to her skin all day!  I did some extra rinses so hopefully that was enough.
