Cloth Diapering

Building my NB Stash

So like many new CD mom's I am extremely overwhelmed on the whole CD situation, but I would like opinions as far as my stash goes. I want to start ordering my stash as soon as possible. So based on my research I have decided to get:

12 GMD NB Prefolds

12 GMD Small Prefolds

2 GMD Cloth-eez Workhorse Diapers

2 Thirsties Duo Wrap Hook and Loop - Size 1

2 Bummis SuperBrite

1- Kissa's Wool Lover Diaper Cover (for night)

I pack of Grovia BioLiners

10- Bummis Reusable Fleece Liners

3- snappis

Am I on the right track here? Will I have enough and are my choices going to work out? Ive spent hours researching a good diaper cover and found thirsties and Bummis have the best reviews.

I also want to get a few pocket diapers, and have 2 Fuzzibunz Perfect Size used for my DD's nightly routine when she was learning to potty train, so I was thinking of getting a couple of XS Fuzzibunz, but I need some serious help from people who actually cloth diaper and have been there!

I dont want to waste my money and my husband is very sceptical about CD alltogether, honestly people think I am crazy for wanting to CD and I dont want to get discouraged by them, nor the overwhelming choices

  • Definitely more diapers. You really need at least 30 for comfortable every other day washing with a newborn.

I would skip the newborn size wool soaker. Newborns get fed & changed roughly every 2 hours around the clock so there really is no need for a special overnight diaper at that stage. Plus the thought of wrangling a newborn into a pull-on cover and then having them immediately pee (which happens all.the.time) and then having to get it off to start over again sounds awful. Especially when sleep deprived in a half-lit room in the middle of the night.

Instead, get at least 2 more covers. Probably more since the newborn super brites will not fit over the size small prefolds or even the newborn workhorses. They are wonderful little covers for the first couple of weeks if your LO is on the small side but they are really tiny.

For a pocket that will fit a newborn, I recommend Kawaii Pure & Natural. The FB XS will be outgrown very quickly and are really hard to stuff. The P&Ns will fit more like the Thirsties size 1 - beyond the newborn stage. Plus they are easier to stuff with extra absorbency if you need it.

    You need more changes, 30-36.
4 covers is enough for an older baby but for NB 6-8 is better. They poop very often, and it is runny and more likely to get on the cover.
Also, ditto to skipping the wool cover. NBs do not need a nighttime solution because they will be changed as often at night as during the day. Wait until baby is older to invest in wool.

You will need at least two wet bags for the diaper bag, and two larger wet bags or pail liners for at home. It is also a good idea to have some CD safe diaper cream on hand as well. CJs is a good option.

  • I really liked the thirsties duo wraps. The size one fit my DD for a long time. But when you need to size up the size 2 is enormous. There was quite a long time when neither fit for us.

We used a lot of sized fuzzibunz and liked them a lot. The xs fit right away. The one size fuzzibunz also can be sized down to fit a newborn, but it is really bulky. We also had some BG xs and thirsties duo diapers in size 1 in our newborn stash along with prefolds and covers. The sized ones were really nice for nighttime diaper changes when we were tired and didn't want to turn on the lights in the nursery.

You will probably want a few more diapers and covers. You go through a lot of them the first couple of weeks. They aren't really used a lot so you can get some good quality newborn diapers used. That's where I got most of ours. Our DD was tiny and didn't gain weight very quickly and was only in newborn diapers for a few months. Most babies wear them for a few weeks.
