Let's talk food based supplements...

Is anybody else taking food based supplements during pregnancy? I would love to hear from you. I am currently taking Dr. Ron's ultrapure vitamins with folate and not folic acid, fermented cod liver oil, high vitamin butter oil, grassfed liver capsules, probiotics and lots of sun for optimal vitamin d level. And yes, I am a crunchy mom if you couldn't tell by all of that :)

I'm taking vitamin code raw prenatals. It's "whole food nutritional support.." So I think that's what you mean? :) it has probiotics included, folate, ginger, raw iron, vitamin d, as well as a sprout blend, mineral enzyme activators, and some other "crunchy" stuff. ;) I also take cod liver oil.
I don't think I'm super crunchy, but I do try to be as natural as possible, when it works best for me and my family, and do things that I'm sure others find odd lol (like make my own deodorant). I started on this journey almost 5 years ago due to chronic hives and chemical sensitivities and I feel 100xs better for it!

  • @bim38106 I have heard great things about those prenatals. I might try them after I run out of my current one. I lol at you making your own deodorant. I make my own lotion and magnesium oil. I started this journey when my son was borne and haven't looked back.

  • I'm using Vitamin Code too, but i forget sometimes to take it three times a day! But i like that it has probiotic, and i am also taking ocean moms dha (comes from sardines and anchovies instead of cod which my doc asked that i stick to the smallest fish)

    I also take Juice Plus.
  • Mine is food based. It's the Rainbow Lite Prenatal One. I really like them!

  • I LOVE vitamin code raw prenatals! I would seriously do a free commercial for them. They make me poop. :)

I do Nordic naturals DHA. It's from anchovies and sardines but with a nice strawberry flavor for those burps on bad morning sickness days.

I'm thinking of taking chlorophyll to ward off the anemia I had last time. Anyone have experience with this?

  • @TXSparky I would suggest desiccated liver capsules to help with anemia.

  • @jaxlife, I am taking almost all of the same things except I take the new chapter prenatals. Where do you get your liver capsules? I have been trying to eat more liver and just can't stomach it right now. Normally I love it! But yay to FCLO and butter oil! Did you read "beautiful babies"?

  • @jaxlife, where do you get the FCLO? I know that's supposed to be way better than regular CLO, but I can't find any locally and don't know which websites to trust...

I take the green pastures brand for FCLO and high vitamin butter oil. Highly recommend taking them together because they work synergistically.

  • I take the Rainbow Lite food-based prenatals and the Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA.  I am curious if anyone has a calcium recommendation?  I don't eat dairy often and I don't think I get enough calcium from other sources.

  • @musgral8 I didn't read beautiful babies but I am really into Weston A. Price's work and thought the new book by Sally Fallon Morrel "nourishing traditions book of baby and childcare" was amazing! I also like the GAPS diet (not sure if you are familiar) I put my son on that nutritional protocol and it's very much in line with weston price's work. The author of the GAPS diet said on a conference I watched online that liver every day during pregnancy is mandatory and I have been following her preconception diet. I buy mine from either radian life or drrons.com because I know they are 100% legit.

  • @bim38106 what pp said. The only brand I know that sells the fermented kind is green pastures. I would buy from their website or radiant life or dr.ron's website. I do not buy supplements off of amazon anymore because there was this big article not long ago about counterfeit products, so I rather pay a few dollars for shipping to make sure it's legit. BTW, if you get some FCLO, get the cinnamon flavor, it's the one that has the least fishy taste :)

  • @klc31883 I don't have a calcium supplement recommendation but I am sure if you google you can find a food based one. In my opinion, I like to get as much nutrients from food instead of supplements, so if you're into that the best place to get calcium from is bone broth. Just make a broth with beef or chicken bones you get from your butcher or leftover meals you cook, throw it in the crockpot with a splash of vinegar for 24 hours and cook with, drink it or make soups. The vinegar draws out the calcium in the bones and makes a nutrient dense broth :)

I make sure I eat at least one cup of bone broth a day. As @jaxlife said, it's super nutrient dense! It has all sorts of minerals that are missing from the standard American diet.
