Cloth Diapering

Desitin and cloth wipes

Hope you don't mind me popping in with a question!  We have been cloth diapering for 8 months now and just got our first diaper rash.  It wasn't going away with the California baby cream I had so I went out and bought disposables and desitin.  I of course completely forgot not to use cloth wipes.  So now I have these wipes I have used desitin with .  How do I wash them now?  I am guessing I shouldn't wash them with the diapers?

Also semi-related question:  we just  used cloth wipes for the first time (don't ask me why I didn't do it before) and they repel water when I try to use a squirt bottle to wet them.  Are they supposed to repel water?  I know I washed them when I first bought them (I assume I prepped them the way I did the diapers).

Thanks!!

Re: Desitin and cloth wipes

  • I'd start with washing the wipes in good hot water a time or two to get the Desitin out. Throw them in with your towels or whites, and it should be fine. It's not as make-or-break with wipes if they have some cream on them.

When I first started using cloth wipes, mine repelled like crazy, too. The water would run right off the wipe and onto the dresser or my kid. I don't know if it was b/c they were new or what. I started storing mine wet b/c it was less annoying. Sometimes I run out of wet wipes, so I keep a spray bottle that I can use to spritz DS and then wipe with a dry wipe. It's kind of funny b/c he gives a little gasp when I spray him and then he goes, "Oooh, cold!"

  • @unaveragejane Thanks!  Do you think I will be eventually be able to wash them with the diapers.  If I rinse a couple times and wash with towels do you think that will be good enough.  I guess I was worried about if the residue on the wipes will somehow affect the diapers if washed together but maybe that won't be a problem after washing on their own a time or two?  It would just be easier once the rash is gone to start using them regularly and washing them with the diapers.

Yes, they should be fine after a couple washes. Enough will have come off by the that t won't come off on your diapers.

  • Yep, like Mrs Hudson said they should be fine after a wash or two. In fact, I've thrown Desitin-covered fleece liners in with my diaper laundry by accident, and it never hurt anything. It's just something I try not to do on a regular basis in case for some reason it did create a repellant residue on the diapers.
