7.5 month old severe constipation

I had to start supplementing with formula this week.  Coincidently, we also offered her more solids than ever before.  I was suspicious that my supply was dropping so that's the reason for all this.  It's like I looked at her one day and realized she looked like she'd lost so much weight!  My 2 year old was the exact same way and it was my supply.  Anyway..I want to say she hasn't gone in 5 days.  We gave her a suppository (actually 2) last night because we could see the stool trying to come out of her rectum but could tell it was really hard.  We were able to take a Q-tip and gently coax some of it out when she'd strain.  We managed to get a mass more than half the size of my daughter's fist out but we're worried there is more since there wasn't really anything behind it.  I've given her prune juice a few times now too.  I plan to make pear juice today.  Is there ANY other solution?  I do not want to give her any more suppositories (that was my husband's idea).  I can't take seeing her in pain trying to poop like this.  Is there any time when a laxative could be safe??

  • If she hasn't had a bowel movement on her own in 2 days I would definitely call/see your pediatrician.  I had to use a suppository a few times but I used my pinky finger out of fear of using a q-tip!

  • Mine went through the same thing about 2 weeks ago (she'll be 8 months this week). I called our pediatrician because she was in so much pain and they said to either use a suppository or use the tip of a thermometer or a qtip with vaseline to lubricate the rectum and help get everything out.

They said if she stayed in pain much longer we'd need to go to the ER to have an enema done. Luckily it had passed within a few more hours after I called. It was so hard to watch her be in pain.

  • I would call pediatrician. And my daughter has had issues with her bowels and we started giving her an extra oz of water in every bottle. Keeps her movements softer. And on days when I knew she was late for a bowel movement I would give her a 4-5oz bottle of just water. I also do not give rice cereal at all. I give her oatmeal and prunes about 3 days a week to help as well.
  • My pedi also said u can mix one tsp of dark brown sugar in bottle twice a day it's a natural stool softener just don't do it too often because they like the extra sweetness and it did help my little guy the one time he had a bad case! Good luck
