Cloth Diapering

Starting solids/ sprayer?

Hello long time lurker here. We have been CD since about 4 weeks old and love it. Since she is EBF I just throw all diapers into wet bag and wash. Solids are around the corner, will I need to get a sprayer or can I get away with dropping any poop any toilet then washing as usual?
Thanks!!

Re: Starting solids/ sprayer?

  • We're lucky in that our bathroom is setup in such a way that we can use the shower head in our bathtub to spray into our toilet. If that wasn't the case, though, we would definitely have needed to get a sprayer. DS had peanut butter poo (or worse...) from the time he started solids until about a week ago (I actually don't know what changed other than that he's not hit "plopable"). Even with disposable liners, I still wound up spraying pretty much every dirty diaper.

So... long story short, @bookitup is right, it depends on your kid.

As an alternative, I know that some people have a "poo spatula" to scrape the waste off, and some people can get away with "swishing."

Definitely depends on the kid and the poop... When we first started solids, her poop was the same explosive EBF mess, just with chunks of food in it. Then it got more peanut buttery and fused on there, DEFINITELY needed the sprayer to take care of those messes. Just recently (after 2 months of solids, and she's consuming much more now) we have seen some ploppable poops, which are really nice! But not every time, we still get some that are pretty messy.

I would not be happy without my sprayer. Some people make it work with different methods but I love the sprayer and I'm not sure I could convince my husband to scrape poo with a spatula, but he thinks the sprayer is cool.

  • We use disposable liners for out and about... but they get pricey.

Love the sprayer.  DD's poop still isn't often ploppable... and she's almost two.

  • I went the poo spatula route.  We had a similar poop transition as @Robi1 - for the first month of solids, it was really just EBF poop with a few specks of food in it.  I let my washer deal with that.  I started scraping when it started thickening up in consistency.

When we're lucky we get ploppable poop, but otherwise, I really quite like the spatula.  I had always planned on switching to a sprayer once we moved into our new place (which we just did) - but the spatula is good enough for me now.  So you can always try things out without the sprayer and see if you can manage well enough, and get a sprayer if/when you decide you need one.

We just started solids and I use the shower head sprayer (it is right next to the toilet and we are in a rental and don't want to mess with the plumbing). I did just order a spray pal as my homemade version didn't really protect the bathroom from getting soaked.

  • Has anyone used a DIY sprayer or does everyone buy theirs already put together?

  • We have a sprayer. However, we did BLW and it took months before he actually ate enough for the poop to change. So we didn't start spraying until then. I think that was somewhere around 8-9 months when that happened.
