Newer screening done around 12 weeks - anyone know?

I am newly pregnant, my last child was born in 2009.  A friend of mine had a blood test done around 12 weeks where they were able to identify the gender of her child.  We aren't finding out this time, but my question is, are they able to tell you at that point if there are abnormalities such as DS, etc?

Most are not covered for most people unless you are Over 35 just FYI.

You can still do the regular NT scan but it just gives you the range and you get further testing

  • The whole point of the test is to find out if there are abnormalities. Not to find out the "gender" . So to answer your question, yes.

    It's a BOY

  • My DH and I are having this done and our insurance does cover it but we have top notch coverage.  Under our insurance it is referred to as the Harmony test.  I suggest googling it for additional info but in laymens terms it is a blood test and the baby's DNA is somehow separated from the mothers blood and they can look for Chromosomal abnormalities such as DS.  Since gender is determined by the chromosomes then that can also be found out.  Our insurance company pays about $1000.  You can go have it done on your own at a lab(we have LabCorp here) and tell them you want to pay for it without insurance and the cost is around $250.  My Ob/Gyn said we can test as early as 9 weeks and have the results within 2 weeks.

  • I had the Panorama test done at 12 weeks in addition to an NT scan. All was perfect on the NT scan, and the blood work was also very normal. Panorama test showed that the baby had a high risk of having Trisomy 13. I was a complete WRECK.

An amnio showed that the baby is fine and does not have Trisomy 13. I wish I never had that test done.

Not this picture again. Who cares if they say gender? It's interchangeable at this point. Even elective sonogram packages refer sex as gender.
This.  Also, OP, "sex" and "gender" no longer mean the same thing.  If you learn this now, you will save yourself a lot of headache on TB later.
