Persistent diaper rash

Hi June mamas. I apologize for not being a regular poster. I've posted a few times in the past, but we don't have internet in our house right now so I mostly lurk when I get on a computer. I'm posting now because I know you ladies are a very knowledgeable bunch.

DD has had diaper rash for 16 days now. She has had diarrhea pretty much that whole time, although it has let up a little in the past couple of days. She is hydrated and has no fever. When it began she was wearing cloth diapers so I was using Grandma El's cream (basically lanolin and something else), and then we started using disposables so I was using a zinc oxide cream. I called the doctor after one week and was told to keep using the zinc cream, but then it was getting worse. I stopped that and was using olive oil (this was on days 8 and 9) and that seemed to help, but it came back again within a couple of days. So I called the doctor again and they told me to use Lotrimin and hydro-cortisone cream 3 times a day, stop all wipes, soak her in the tub, etc. That's what we have been doing since Thursday, and she appeared to be getting better again. But today she flared up again and she has small, raised red bumps all around there. There is no pus or oozing. I plan to call the doctor again tomorrow but I was wondering if any of you had suggestions until then. Has this happened to any of your LO's? Can you think of why it keeps coming back? She's still in disposables; I may try to switch back to cloth to see if it helps.

Sorry this was long. Thanks in advance!

Re: Persistent diaper rash

  • It could be anything from the type of diaper your using to something that she is eating. You can try switching to a different brand of daipers and see if that helps.

  • Thanks ladies. I was thinking yeast too. I'm just confused because the Lotrimin is anti-fungal and we've been on that for 3 days, so I wasn't expecting it to return. I'll be interested to hear what the doc says tomorrow.
  • Can you post a pic? Yeast rashes are pretty classic appearing!

So glad I'm not the only one who mixes creams together!
OP, my LO had yeast on his neck early on (serious drooler) and nystatin mixed with a little cortisone was what finally did it.

Yes, the bumps are yeast. We fought a diaper rash for almost a month due to a few different antibiotics. I called and the nurse told us to soak LO in a bath with vinegar and 1/4 of water. Also, use A&D with some vaseline. I noticed a difference in 24 hrs. Now and time I see a diaper rash on the verge, I never use anything but vaseline and its gone in no time.

  • What pp have said and definitely try to give her some diaper free time. 10-15 min a few times a day.

  • I didn't mean to abandon this thread. Thank you to everyone for replying. I don't have a pic at this time, but yesterday and today the bumps are gone and it's just red again. I will try vaseline and other suggestions. The doc said if it's not gone by tomorrow or Thursday then to definitely bring her in. I was just trying to hold off on that since her next well-child visit is Monday. But I feel so bad for her little bottom. :(
  • Well, if it's NOT yeast, have you tried oatmeal baths?
