Cloth Diapering

Diaper Change Advice

LO is on antibiotics for a double ear infection and we're on poop number 4 this morning. That would be fine but diaper changes have turned into wrestling matches and cry fests. He'll lie still long enough for me to open his diaper and then he turns over and tries to crawl away with a poop covered butt. I can't keep him still and wipe his butt at the same time.
Any advice on how to keep him happy and entertained? I've tried changing him in different places, giving him new things to play with, being silly, nothing is working. I'm at my wits end! Maybe it would be easier to let him go diaperless and clean poop and pee out of the floor at this point. ;)

Oh and he is on a probiotic. It doesn't seem to be helping the poop situation. I have it to him first thing this morning, though. So maybe it will help the rest of the day...

  • It depends on your set up. Our changing table (has rails) is in our bathroom. It is next to the wall. between the table and the wall we have a mirror. She loves to look at her self in the mirror while we change her. I also make up songs. If her belly is clean I"ll blow raspberries on her belly. She loves it when I mock her stinky butt. Like this morning I sang her The what does the fox say, but instead I did what does your butt say.... she loved the farting sounds I made.

  • This is probably not a good thing, but my last resort is an old iPhone that is no longer connected to an account. It's his designated phone, it lives in a Fischer-Price Apptivity case, and we've put a bunch of music and short videos on it that we feel are appropriate for him. It settles him down pretty quickly.
  • His changing pad is on the dresser. No matter how tight I get the strap he manages to turn over and try to get away.

He hasn't pooped in 2 hours. Maybe things are looking up.

  • A friend taught me this trick to combat the alligator death roll move. Lay him down to change him on the floor, and out your legs straight out in front of you to form walls around him. If he's still trying to get away you can use your legs to pin down his arms (it sounds mean, but it does keep a wiggly kid still for the minute or so it takes to change a stinky diaper!)
  • I haven't tried that! I'm sure it will result in lots of tears, but no poop everywhere!
