103.1 rectal temperature

Kind of freaking out a bit. I hate waiting for the doctor to call back, I always feels like it takes forever! LO is sleeping and I just want to take him into urgent care but I figure I'll remain calm and give it a half hour to see if the Motrin brings it down. I'm pretty sure the 'panic' temp is 104 but that's awfully close in my book :(

Re: 103.1 rectal temperature

  • I'm the same way! It's like the return call takes years. Does he have other symptoms? I hope you get it sorted quickly and he gets better soon.

  • Lydia had a 104 temp today, but no other cold symptoms. I called the advice nurse and because she was still drinking and not listless at all (cranky, but that is to be expected), she said 106 is the "oh sh*t" temp. I don't think I could wait that long (even though I am a Pediatric ICU nurse!). Is he your normal boy except for a fever? If so, give the meds and give it time. Strip him down to just a onesie and push fluids. If he has a runny nose, cough or rash, I'd take him in.

    Hang in there, mama!

  • He hasn't been my normal happy boy :( He has a cough and was up multiple times the last 2 nights which is rare for him. He also normally eats and drinks a lot but today he didn't. He drank normal yesterday but only ate half of his dinner and today I couldn't get him to eat breakfast and he slept through dinner. He only had a small plate of mac n cheese after that nap. Now I'm freaking out! Really wish the dr would call!
  • Yeah I'd bring him in. The cough, extra sleep, and not eating with a fever would do it. I really hope you get a call soon.

  • The doctor called, told me to watch his breathing and if the temperature hits 105 to call back. The office is open tomorrow so I'll bring him in first thing! I'm a little calmer now because I woke him up to take his temp and it went down to 102 and I gave him the Motrin an hour ago so it's working.
  • That sounds like us last week. She was sent home from daycare with a temp of 103 and wasn't herself at all... No appetite, just wanted to be held, etc. We gave her Tylenol for the fever and treated the rest like a cold... Get fluids and some food in when I could, let her sleep as desired, etc. Her fever broke after about 36 hours, and she's getting back to normal. Seems like something is going around.

  • A fever is a good thing it means your body is fighting something off and you need the temperature to do that. Doing a fever reducer defeats the propose and will make the sickness last long. As long as there are no other issues, I would push liquids, dress LO in just a diaper and follow their lead- they may want to snuggle, read books, sit & play (vs running around).
  • ^^ also, without other serious symptoms 104 isn't the panic temp, it's the call the doctor temp. You shouldn't give fever reducer unless LO is really uncomfortable and upset. Better to let the fever do it's job.

  • Well we went to the doctor today and he has his first ear infection. The ped recommended Tylenol or Motrin to help keep him comfortable. I'm hoping it will make him feel well enough to drink more.
