High-Risk Pregnancy

Vasa previa

Hi ladies,

I'm 24.5 weeks pregnant and found out last week I have vasa previa and will most likely need a c-section around 34 weeks.

I'm just curious if any one else has this or had it? If so what are your doctors saying?

Re: Vasa previa

  • I have a velamentous cord without vasa previa, but my doctors said if I had it they would give a c-section at 35 weeks to avoid the possibility of going into labor. I hope you are able to shake off your worries for the rest of your pregnancy!

I had Vasa Previa dx at 19w, admitted to ante natal ward at 32w and delivered by c-s at 35w, short NICU stay CPAP and had Tachyapnea (sp?), healthy 10 month old boy :)

Righto anyway, what the Specialist told me was that I would need to have regular CTG monitoring to ensure baby's head wasn't pressing down on the vein crossing the cervix, we also had regular scans, these started at 24w fortnightly and weekly from 30w. If you do have any bleeding related to this, it will be painless, which is dangerous, don't take no pain as a positive thing ... If you do have any bleeding get yourself in an Ambulance, yell at them you have VP until they understand your need an ambulance NOW and get yourself into to hospital (this was his exact words!) For me it all went 100% to plan, I had a c-section at 35w because I delivered my first baby spontaneously at 36w, they didn't want to risk me going into pre-term labour at home. Normally if everything is going fine, you will be scheduled for 37w. This link is the beet definitive information I found without being totally scared by it all : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_praevia Try not to read Dr Google too much, like I did :/ it will just freak you out. Best of luck :)
  • Check out the international vasa revia foundations website at vasaprevia.org. Lots of great information including guidelines for management. I had hospital bedrest at 32 weeks and a c section at 34 weeks. You will be fine if you take this seriously and I'd recommend consulting with an MFM experienced with VP. VP is definitely manageable but in no way "no big deal". Best wishes to you.
