3dt vs 5dt

Is there a difference In success rates for 3 day transfer vs 5 day? Why do they make the decision to do one vs the other?

IVF #1 Oct 2013- cancelled 
IVF #2 Mar 2014- success.... baby girl born 11/28/14
FET #1 Mar 2016- baby boy due 12/16/16

    All I really know if that 3 Day Embryos are still using mostly all your DNA and metabolism. On Day 5. Dh's DNA and metabolism are also taken into effect. So if you're worried about sperm quality- you have no way of knowing how the embryo will do when it is transferred on Day 3. By Day 5, the embryo should have its own DNA/Metabolism (which is combined from you and dh) so it could is usually a better indicator if it can last to day 6- knowing that its own system is working.

    From what I understand, 5dt is preferable because it allows the embryologist to pick the strongest embryo.

    @poohniki‌, your explanation gives me some peace of mind about our embryo situation. It's a little hard to explain why, but knowing that makes me feel better - I don't feel 100% to blame for all of this.

    Me: 32 DH: 35  TTC#1 since March 2012
    Dx: Poor Embryo Quality, Arcuate Uterus, Poor Uterine Blood Flow, Mild Endo, 
           Protein S Deficiency, Sjorgen's Syndrome 

    IUI #1-5: BFN
    Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy: minimal endo, partial septoplasty
    IVF #1: 10R/6M/6F ~ Day 3 ET = BFN
    IVF #2: 14R/9M/5F ~ transfer canceled ~ all embryos arrested at 1-2 cell stage
    IVF #3: 9R/5M/5F ~ 1 frosty!
    IVF #4 (FET #1): BFN

    IVF #5 (DE IVF #1 with Dr. KK protocol): Currently PREGNANT!!!!!!
    Synthroid + Prednisone + Metformin + Baby Aspirin + Supplements Galore = 15+ pills a day
    Lupron + Lovenox + Delestrogen + IVIG + B/W = 2-5 pokes a day
    19R, 17M, 17F - transferred two Grade A blasts 11/16, four frosties!!!
    Beta #1 11/24 (13dpo/8dp5dt) = 367 ~ Beta #2 11/26 (15dpo/10dp5dt) = 709
    Beta #3 11/29 (18dpo/13dp5dt) = 1,997 ~ Beta #4 12/1 (20dpo/15dp5dt) = 3,403

    IUI #2 (injects) IUI BFN
    2/14 through 3/14 benched with a cyst
    IVF#1 CD1 came before beta. BFN. No frosties.
    Benched with cysts...
    IVF#2 beta moved up due to heavy bleeding 6dp5dt...beta was 11. beta#2 20.4! Beta#3 28 Chemical pregnancy :(
    Currently on BCPs with cysts, planning IVF#3 Everyone welcome!

    TX: IUI #1 with Follistim. Canceled due to too many follicles (10 + that were large); BENCHED
    IVF #1 March 6. 14 eggs retrieved, 10 fertilized. 
    March 11, 4 eggs transferred.
    March 21 BFP  :) Beta #1 457, Beta #2 1350, Beta #3 9619.

    From what we have heard from our RE, a book we reference, and web searches, some RE's think that it is more natural to transfer embryos at 3dt to let it progress naturally inside.  Most do seem to prefer the 5dt of blastocysts. 

    My 5dt is tomorrow and we were reading tonight that only 40% of fertilized eggs make it to the blastocyst phase.  By waiting two extra days and only transferring blastocycts, it weeds out the embryos that likely woudln't have made it.

    There have been many people on these boards lately that have mentioned going to 3dt because they only had about 1 or 2 embryos to work with.  At that point, there is no sense in waiting to choose the best.
