Cloth Diapering

Best bottoms questions?

After doing some research I decided to go with the best bottom snap in system for my little girl.
How many of each size should I get?
How many covers?
How many doublers for overnights should I get?
If I were to use some prefolds , would the BB cover fit snug enough to hold them in place since they don't snap in? I really would prefer not to have to buy separate covers just for prefolds.
How bulky are they under the clothes. Would you recommend getting some onsie extensions?

Sorry for all of these questions. I don't want to buy too little or too much. Thank you!

Re: Best bottoms questions?

  • I have a BB cover and no issues using prefolds.  It works the same as any other cover, except there is a spot to snap in an insert.

Can't answer any other question... I don't have the inserts.

  • I only have the hemp soakers in large. They work fine with the cover at the smallest rise, just make sure the soaker isn't poking out. I didn't notice any bunching.

I think the stay dry ones are more bulky (from pictures and the nature of the materials.) and I love the hemp ones.

I don't have experience with the doublers, I would just lay in another soaker. It works well.

I don't know if you are planning on using these for the nb stage or not, but ours took a while to fit. I have a skinny guy. Some people have had them fit pretty early, but I don't think they used them as nb diapers.

  • We love our Best Bottoms, we currently use the medium stay dry inserts. We've never used the doublers, but a friend of mine sold me all of her large inserts including the doublers, so I'll try those later. DS wears BG pockets at daycare and his onesies are loose when we change him into his Best Bottom when we get home, so they are definitely less bulky than a pocket diaper. We use the covers over other things too, we don't use prefolds, but they work over his Bamboozle fitted. I think we have about 15 inserts, but he's only in those evenings and weekends.

  • You're only using BBs?  I love my BBs, but I use them as covers.  I haven't tried the inserts yet.  If I were you, I'd get a few smalls to try them out and get some prefolds to decide what you like before investing in a large amount of inserts.

  • I'd start out with one 3-pack of the small stay dry and one 3-pack of the small cotton/hemp, along with some prefolds. That way you can experiment to see what you like best before buying a whole set.

We primarily use prefolds, but have some small inserts of both varieties for experimenting. My plan is to skip the mediums and buy larges when they outgrow the smalls.
