Formula change = poop change?

We were using Similac Advance (blue), but LO seemed fussy and would cry after eating as if in pain. Gas drops didn't help much. The Ped nurse suggested trying Similac Sensitive (orange). When we did last night there was an immediate positive change: after feeding = happy sleepy baby instead of screaming angry baby.
But...although her tummy and disposition are better, I'm worried about her poops now. Old formula she'd just have one large thick BM per day. Now it's every diaper change and significantly soupy-er.
She seems fine otherwise. I called the after hours nurse and she said as long as everything else seems okay a little diarrhea isn't anything to worry about.
My question: any one else switch formulas and have this change in poo? And was it just a period of adjustment or is this the new normal? Maybe this formula isn't the way to go. It seems to fix tummy issues but cause colon issues.

Re: Formula change = poop change?

  • We changed and our pedi said his poops might look different.  I don't remember if they actually did, but he definitely told us they might.

  • It's normal for there to be a little change when switching formulas. I'd give it a few days and if it's still abnormal I would call the pedi. Also, if LO is having some diarrhea I would make sure to use a good rash cream for prevention!

  • Yup we experienced the same thing- runny watery stool from stringy mustardy ones. Pedi said normal as long as baby seems to eating fine however if frequency does seem to increase you are always better off double checking with them. It happened when we put him in similac alimentum - he hated it!! We are back on the gentlease and he seems to be happier.
  • I agree with @ziggy903‌, make sure you use rash cream! DD's allergy made her have soupy poops at every single diaper change and she got a horrible rash, although it was partly from the allergy. if it lasts more than 2-3 days, I'd call the pedi.

  • Okay. We'll lube her up good each change and call again if things get worse or don't improve in a few days.

    Good plan! :)

  • Just wanted to share with DS I changed formula several times due to what we later found out was lactose intolerance ...... the consisancy and color of the poop was different with each formula. The simlac blue and yellow had more iron in it and that poop was darker and more firm than all the other brands I tried
