anyone use the Bob book sets (paperback not app)? need an opinion on next level

Just curious--- I bought the app awhile ago & liked it but my kids lost interest relatively quickly, it is a bit slow moving, though maybe I had too low a level if the app comes in different levels? (I don't honestly know, I guess I should look).

I picked up the advanced beginner book set the other day and left it out for my kids to initiate wanting to read (they generally refuse to try if I push it or try to get htem to sound out words, etc) and DS picked it up the next day & started reading it. To my surprise, he is able to read all of them, with very little help from me, mostly on some of the people/animal names the first time he sees them and on a few letter combos...

So I am thinking of getting another set for him and am wondering if I should go to the Kindergarten sight words one or the word families set? I looked on amazon & you can 'look inside' and I feel like the sight words one looks like the same words as advanced beginner, just in a different format (I can see the value, as there are not pictures next to the words & I do wonder if he memorizes the sentences after sounding them out a couple times b/c of the accompanying picture)...  The word families set looks like it ups the ante a little on longer words & different combinations but I don't want it to be too hard & frustrate him (amazon reviews seem to indicate this could happen, a lot of new sounds).

Thoughts?

  • I didn't know what these books were until yesterday when I did research on teaching my daughter to read because she has shown a lot of interest in learning. So I don't have any personal knowledge of the books. However, I checked our library for them and our local library has the entire series, so I have the first couple on reserve. I didn't want to buy the set and DD not have an interest in them. Have you checked the library?

Haaaaa duh. No, I didn't!!!. I work in the total opposite direction from our library so I often forget about it but maybe next Sat. I can make it a point to get there.

GL w/ your DD! the 'stories' in the books are very silly so I think they're good for initial learning to sound out, grouping similar sounds & words but overall not a great investment as they're not going to want to re-read for very long.  But that adv. beg series really jump started my DS so they served their purpose.  I'm going to move on to the Dr Suess beginner books I think when we're done w/ these, we'll see how that goes.

  • I used the Bob books with my son. We bought set 1 beginning readers, set 3 word families and First grade sight words (he's currently in first grade) that was all we needed to get him reading although of course, every child is different.

I looked at set 2 and set 3 and thought they were so similar I didn't need both. Didn't look at the kindergarten sight words set though so no help there.
  • We "auditioned" the different Bob sets via the library as well.
