Gestational Diabetes Roll Call!

I saw someone reference a GD Check In on April 14 in another thread and I thought it might be helpful to have our own. We can keep this thread going with tips and questions or post a check in weekly.

1. When did you get your diagnosis?

2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds?

3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us?

4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control?

5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal?

    1. When did you get your diagnosis? Around 28 weeks

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds?
    So far, diet controlled

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us?
I exercise, but in third tri, I'm getting more and more tired. Protein smoothies are my friend.

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control?
Sometimes it's frustrating. Breakfast sucks for me, so I stick to the same thing that works. But today I tested a little late and was over my limit, ugh. Other times, I feel like I have this under control.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal?
Sandwich crackers, protein smoothies, string cheese, grapes.

    1. When did you get your diagnosis?

I failed my GTT at 28wk 5d and found out that day. Now I'm 32wk2d.

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on
    meds?

Diet controlled with pretty good numbers so far.

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us?

I've just been trying my best to follow my meal plan while still eating the foods I like. I'm also trying to get a little exercise everyday, but cold weather and pelvic pain has been holding me back.

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control?

I was really really sad about my diagnosis at first. Like sobbing for a couple days. I felt so much better after meeting with the dietician and hearing that I was restricting myself more than necessary. I still have my moments now, but it's easier than I thought it would be.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal?

For breakfast I've been having Light n Fit Greek yogurt with a little high protein/low carb granola and couple pieces of bacon. They have some really good yogurt flavors and they all have 8-9 carbs. I'm also treating myself to bun less burgers a couple times per week. Five Guys is my favorite. I can have a burger and split a fries with my husband and still keep my numbers in range.

katsmewsings glad you are having a better day and your dietitian was so helpful!

    1. When did you get your diagnosis?

This is my second GD pregnancy. With DD I was diagnosed around 28 weeks after the 1 and 3 hour tests. This pregnancy I tested around 19 weeks and passed. My follow-up 1 hour around 26 weeks was 3 points over the limit. After discussing with my MW, I chose to skip the 3 hour and be treated as GD. I have been loosely following the diet for a lot of this pregnancy anyway in preparation.

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds?

Diet controlled so far, however I did require glyburide before bed for my fasting #s last pregnancy toward the end.

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us?

I'm learning this pregnancy that I really need enough complex carbs and fat to balance my numbers along with my high protein. I kept trying to cut carbs and my numbers were high. Adding in good carb sources has been helpful....oatmeal, carb controlled bread. I've also been making sure my dairy is full or high fat and plain. Then I can add in my own berries or other toppings.

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control?

I'm doing okay at this point. Although I was preparing myself this entire pregnancy for GD, I found that I was still very frustrated when it became official. I think more of it had to do with my desires for a low intervention birth then the actual GD. I was induced a week early with DD and although I had a really great experience, I want to experience going into labor and other such things this pregnancy. Luckily I'm with a great midwife practice that will work with me to encouraged labor even if I need to schedule an induction for a legit medical reason.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal?

The past few nights I've been mixing oatmeal, cottage cheese and apple butter for my bedtime snack. It's actually really tasty :-)

    1. When did you get your diagnosis?
Two weeks ago at about 28 weeks. Took the class at 29 weeks, so I've been monitoring my blood sugar for a week.
    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds?
    Diet controlled
    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us?
I have been having a hard time pinpointing the problem whenever I have a high reading. For example, this week I've been eating a half of a whole grain bagel with high protein cream cheese for breakfast. On Tues, Wed, and Friday of this week my after-breakfast number was fine. But on Monday and Thursday, it was high. On those days my fasting numbers were a little high too, so it might have to do with what I ate the night before, how well I slept, stress level, etc. Maybe after another week of this I'll have a better idea.
    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control?
It was really frustrating at first when I was not seeing a direct correlation between what I ate and what my BS number was an hour later. But I've decided to let go of that stress, and just keep doing the best I can. Overall, it hasn't been terrible. The majority of my numbers this week were in range, and the ones that weren't were never more than about 155, so overall I think I'm doing ok. But I really hate pricking my finger!
    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal?
My go-to snack has been an apple with peanut butter. For dinner, we've been doing grilled chicken/pork/steak with veggies and a potato or mac & cheese on the side, and that's been working out well.

**Note, I'm more of a lurker than commenter, but having GD I think this will be helpful for myself and others! Thanks for understanding!**

    1. When did you get your diagnosis?
29 weeks, but I had GD with my first pregnancy and was diagnosed then at 24 weeks. I lived in a different state, so it was controlled differently (and from what I understand, oddly). With #1, I had to go in every 2 weeks for a two hour test, but I brought my own breakfast. Basically, they really trusted me.

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds? Diet.

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us? I just started pricking and checking my levels this week, and they've been good, I mean really good. Like all under 100 most days. I have given up a LOT of carbs, and will slowly start adding them back in to stay under 130, which is what my nutritionist recommended (although the official cutoff is 140).

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control? I'm doing ok. It sucks having to prick my finger...it's a weird feeling to cause yourself pain, but it's nice in the fact I can see what works for me and what doesn't. Like others said, it also sucked getting the diagnosis again, I had my day of bawling and woe-is-me. Ultimately though, one can do almost anything for a few months and to help the health of their child (screw my health, ha).

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal? For breakfast I love a fried egg, ham, and cheese, usually on 1/2 an English muffin. Throw a little Siracha and arugula on there and call it gourmet. Or, I go the whole wheat frozen waffle with peanut butter route when I don't want to "cook". Kind bars make great snacks on the run, just check the carbs on some of them (I try to stay under 17-18). Lunch is a hodge podge of what's in the fridge. Check out the website Skinnytaste.com and search low carb recipes...I found some delicious things there for lunch and dinner. Other good snacks are Greek yogurt, cheese and salami (I don't really subscribe to the whole don't eat deli meat thing), Skinny Cow cookie dough ice cream bars (especially at night...yum!), bowl of popcorn, veggies and hummus, and veggies and tzatziki dip.

Hi, can I join? I have a diagnosis of impaired fasting glucose. But my doctor is treating me as if I have GD so I'll be doing a lot of the same things y'all do, including food journaling & pricking my finger 4 times a day.

    1. When did you get your diagnosis? Tuesday

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds? We will be starting with a diet. If after a week my numbers don't look better they will add medication.

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us? I haven't started the diet yet, I'll get back to you next week.

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control? I have mixed feelings. I am worrying about how I'll feel when I have to give up the sugar treats next week. Sometimes my cravings for sugar remind me of the nicotine cravings when I quit smoking. I'm afraid I'll cave because I "don't really have diabetes." But on the other hand, the diet seems really healthy so I'm happy to give my baby the best nutrition for these last few weeks.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal? I know that almond butter is going to be a staple. And eggs.

    1. When did you get your diagnosis? My doctor had me start following the diet at 24 weeks after miserably failing my one-hour but was actually diagnosed and started tracking at 26 weeks after my three-hour.

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds? Diet-controlled.

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us? Making sure to pair protein with everything and being mindful of my carbs. I also make sure to stay active, which I think helps.

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control? It's fine, I guess. Haha It can be ind of annoying at times. I feel like I eat a LOT of the same things over and over because I just want to stick with what works so it's kind of boring.  Overall though, it's really not bad and I like that I'm eating healthy.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal? Banana with peanut butter for an afternoon snack.

    20 weeks

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds? Currently diet controlled, but possibly starting metformin.

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us? The only thing that helps bring my numbers down is exercise. I play Just Dance with my girls after meals.

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control? I'm feeling a bit down, I was able to keep my numbers under control with diet with DD2. This time I'm having trouble with my fasting, so there's talk of meds.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal? Black bean and corn chicken chili.

    1. 29th week. Am in my 32nd week now.

    2. Insulin. Just started it a few days ago. Tried diet, but no matter what I did my fasting numbers were too high.

    3. Insulin ;). That and avoiding dairy more or less except for bedtime snack. Can get away with cheese and cottage cheese...but a glass of milk is the kiss of death. Lactose apparently spikes me.

    4. I am ok with the dx, and am meh about the diet, but I have been struggling with frustration about my numbers. I mean, the same bfast will be fine five different times...then one day will be holy shit NOT fine...then is fine again afterwards. I know it is likely baby related, but it still is frustrating. Am also struggling some with the fact that baby is measuring like three weeks ahead.

    5. I have discovered I can get away with SF ice cream for a bedtime snack if I pair it with almonds. :P. And I can get away with almond milk

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control? So far I'm doing pretty good with it, it's hard to adjust with the cravings of a milkshake.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal? My snack so far has been yogurt. It really helps when i have a dairy craving and for late night sweet snack.

    1. When did you get your diagnosis? I was diagnosed at 27 weeks, 30 weeks now. I have PCOS and my family has a solid history of diabetes, so I was not too surprised by the diagnosis.

    2. Are you diet controlled or are you on meds? I am diet controlled and it seems to be holding pretty well. I have some jumps in numbers at times, but overall keeping them controlled.

    3. What's helping you control your blood glucose numbers? Any tricks you can give us? I have noticed that my breakfast numbers are higher when I am not active in the morning. I have a pretty active job so during the week is good, but on the weekends when I am home and resting in the morning, they are higher. Staying active seems to be really important for me.

    4. How are you doing? How are you feeling about your diagnosis/treatment plan/blood sugar control? I am doing pretty well. I thought it would be really tough to cut out the carbs, as I have always loved them. I do miss cakes and cookies though :) I look at this as a way to keep myself healthier.

    5. What your favorite GD friendly snack or meal? Peanut butter and whole wheat english muffins have been a great breakfast food. I have been having sugar free chocolate pudding and some cool whip to help with my sweet tooth.
