The awesome response @musicalsilver gave me on antibodies and @majwv8's nerdy pi picture made me wonder what you all do for a living again. I know we've talked about this before, but I feel I know a lot of you better so it may stick this time
I'm a genetics and molecular biology PhD student in an immunology lab (should be defending my dissertation next month maybe?).
I'm looking for a job.
However, I'm totally burnt out from this stupid PhD.
I want a job explaining science to cool people like you all. That's at least satisfying!!
I'm pretty sure I'll wind up with a postdoc in academia? If I'm lucky. So more of what I'm doing now. The flexible hours are so nice that I just can't see making the switch over to a more rigid industry job yet. Or I could, because you know, it pays well. And might be more translational.
Consulting Actuary. I work in property and casualty insurance as a consultant to insurance companies and other self insured entities - doing the math behind setting rates and reserves.
Hairstylist, though my shop isn't really a salon. It's a photography studio and boutique that sells things made locally (mostly for moms, kids, and green living type stuff). It's also a resource center for families and parents. We do lots of classes and activities. I'm hoping to get my babywearing certification so I can do individual consults as well. Aaaand William comes with me everyday!
@Stargazer763 Do people ask you about their horoscopes and shit? Seriously?
Sort of. Yesterday one of the moms in my local moms' group asked what I taught, and when I said astronomy she mentioned how some client of hers couldn't work with someone because their signs were incompatible. (I was facepalming by this point.) Then there was a pause when I think she wanted me to explain, and then she asked if that wasn't the type of astrology (note the word) that I taught. (BTW I like her and she's very nice.)
I think people have no idea what astronomy is. They hear the word and think "astrology." Normally when someone asks, it's "tell me about my sign." And seriously, I die a little inside.
I needed a science credit in University, so I took astronomy thinking it would be easier then say, chemistry. God was I wrong! Who knew Astronomy involved physics, I spent more time on that class then any other that semester. (I was smart enough to know it has nothing to do with astrology though when I signed up!)
Voice teacher and SAHM - I teach just over 7 hours a week right now. Before kids I was an office manager at a boutique corporate event management firm. So nice to be doing what I love now! Hoping to find more performance opportunities as the boys get older, but I had to put that on hold for now.
SAHM. In my previous life I did national sales and marketing. Now I'm an ambassador for Plexus weight loss and wellness products. Love making some $$$ again! If you haven't tried it yet check it out:
Currently I'm a SAHM. Before I had O I worked with DOD. I went to school to be a paralegal though, which I'm no longer interested in. I'm starting my volunteering next month working with teen moms. Something I think I could enjoy doing long term. Crossing fingers doors openfor me. :-)
