PCOS question - coming over from TTC

Hi,

I'm coming over from TTC and wondering if all of you all were able to get pregnant without medication, having PCOS?  It's been suggested that I have it (via u/s today) but not bloodwork, so I don't know if I have it yet or not.  We have been trying to get pregnant since last May (had a loss in Sept) and just started charting in December.  Just want to get an idea if it's possible to conceive w/o meds with PCOS or if chances are high that I'll have to get on meds.

Thanks in advance!!
Laura

Re: PCOS question - coming over from TTC

  • https://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/4b2761 - here's my chart.

I think (?) I'm ovulating?  based on the change in temp in my charts and the one time I got a positive OPK.  But I guess that's not a confirmation of ovulation?

  • I have PCOS and didn't have cycles on my own for a year coming off of BC.  I got on Metformin and finally started having long cycles.  I did do treatment, but ended up getting pregnant the cycle after a failed treatment.

It helps that you are tracking your cycles and it is possible to get pregnant not using medication for some people.
  • I got pregnant while on metformin for insulin resistance. I agree with previous posters that the timing of our cycles seems to be the biggest hurdle. For many (myself included ) a low GI diet helped as well - but that all depends on if you are insulin resistant or not. Keep charting, and best of luck to you!

  • DS was a clomid and metformin baby. DD was 18 months off bcp and no fertility meds, and a surprise since we assumed it wasn't happening for us without help.

    Then we had you.

    Now we are complete.

  • Both my pregnancies were spontaneous. We were hoping for a BFP for over a year and a half with this last one, but once I started charting, it only took 6 months. If you are charting, keep it up and don't get discouraged.
  • Thanks everyone!!  I really appreciated the feedback!

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS about 10 years ago, I've been on metformin for most of that time. It brought my cycles back to normal and I've been regular since. My husband and I started ttc last month and we got lucky - I found out tuesday that I'm pregnant - about 4 weeks along. I was tracking my cervical mucus and used the Clear Blue Easy Ovulation prediction kit. Didn't think the kit would work because it says its not recommended for women with PCOS, but apparently it was right on for me. Try tracking the mucus as well. Good Luck!!

I could not conceive my DS without meds/IUI but surprisingly got pregnant with no help with this pregnancy.

  • We tried for almost a year without success.  I was diagnosed with PCOS, put on metformin, and got pregnant in 6 months.  Still on metformin and got pregnant on the first attempt.

  • I took metformin for about a year to help with ovulating. I then stopped taking it because it was still upsetting my stomach so much. I had been off of birth control because it gave me migraine headaches and as soon as I stopped taking it they went away.

We consider ourselves beyond lucky that with PCOS and endometriosis we got pregnant quickly. I really believe the metformin helped with the ovulation.

I should also mention I had surgery 5 years ago and they lasered out my endometriosis and my cysts. They said it would help for when I wanted to have a baby.

    FX for you!

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS this past November after an anovulatory cycle which lasted over 70 days and finally ended with Provera. We did some fertility testing, and voila PCOS diagnosis. My OB said he could give me metmorfin or refer us to an RE for Clomid. We had already been trying since July 2013, and were hoping to be pregnant by the end of the year for some personal reasons. We decided to do two rounds of Clomid then take a break, because I was going to be travelling for work.

Both cycles of Clomid were failed, and then the cycle immediately after we stopped Clomid, we got our BFP. We were shocked, because our RE was already talking about doing IUIs coming this spring.

In hindsight, I think we moved a little too fast into medicated cycles. If you are ovulating, just not regularly, I recommend using OPKs & temping to confirm O. This can help your timing, which as PP said is usually the problem if you are in fact ovulating.

I was pretty upset when I got my PCOS diagnosis and believed the worst would be my reality. I plan to try for at least a year using OPKs & temping with our second before going the medicated cycle route.

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2004, after trying for a year unsuccessfully. I've done many treatment cycles over the years and never had any luck. Then somehow out of nowhere after 11 years of doing nothing to prevent pregnancy and giving up and accepting the fact we'd never have a child, here we are. So anything is possible I suppose!

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS 8 years ago I was told I could have problems conceiving or not be able to have children at all. My husband and I got married in Sept. we decided to start TTC in January because we were told it could take years. Well they were wrong it took me a whole week to get pregnant! My friend that doesn't have PCOS it took her a year and a half, so you never know.  So it's very possible.
