I failed the 3 hour GTT

Failed it miserably, I might add. I am being referred to maternal fetal medicine (again). I am feeling low about it, but trying to think positive. It is only a few weeks, and it will help make sure baby and I are healthy.

But I am still a little scared. :-(

Re: I failed the 3 hour GTT

  • Thank you. I appreciate it. I needed some reassuring words today. I am not even sure when I see the specialist, because it is a they will call you situation. So I am trying to read up on it a bit, but reading about the diet online is pretty confusing. I guess until my appt I just try to watch my carbs and sugar intake. I can't monitor my sugar until I have a monitor to do so.

  • I failed it horribly  too. It hasnt been too difficult yet with the diet. Ive had to cut sugary drinks like soda and juice out of my diet. Also anything that has like over 5g of sugar per serving seems to push me over the limit I can be. The most annoying part is having to prick my fingers 2 hours after eating (its what my doctor suggested at least).

I didn't change how I eat really.. besides smaller portions and less sugar products, it seems to be working. I usually have higher blood sugar after breakfast but thats just me. Trying to work out a better meal for that time of day. I suppose if your doctor makes you change your diet completely thats one thing but at least in my case I haven't had to.

It gets easier.. though this is coming from someone who is only on her first week of the diet but I think I can handle it. Just keep thinking positive thoughts on how its going to make you and LO healthier ^.^

  • I didn't fail my 3 hour but I did get a pretty high fasting glucose number so they're treating me as if I have GD. I agree, the diet seems kinda confusing. 1 starch + 1 protein - a fruit = I can haz GD friendly meal? :-/

I'm trying not to stress on it until I meet with the nutritionist next week. In the meantime, I'm doing what you're doing - trying to be more sensible. But I still have Oreos in the house and think "Gotta eat them before they go to waste!"

  • Welcome to the GD club! It really is not too bad once you get in the swing of things. I try to look at it as a way to make sure I eat better for myself and the baby. I have been fortunate and able to control it with diet. Until you meet with the nutritionist, I can tell you the guidelines I was given while waiting for my appointment. 15 carbs for breakfast, 15-30 for snacks, 45 for lunch and dinner. It seems to be working well for me so far. Some days are higher than others, but overall can't complain. I agree cutting out drinks like juice and soda made a big difference. Good luck!

  • If they want you to go to a GD class, I would recommend it. That's where they gave me a personalized meal plan. Everything that is allowed is on it, making it easy to follow. My main issue was breakfast. So I stick to toast with peanut butter and a glass of milk. It's not hard to get the hang of it. Sometimes there are "huh?" moments. Like for me, I can have pizza with no problem, but one small waffle, sends me over the edge. You'll get the hang of things, and there's quite a few of us GD gals here. We're always here to help!

  • Don't stress too much until you meet with a dietitian or diabetes educator. I was really upset in the beginning and I was also restricting myself more than necessary. Sometimes it still sucks, but overall it's been much easier than I imagined.

For now I would just remove sugary drinks and food from your diet and focus on eating small, frequent meals/snacks with balanced protien and carbs.

another GD May Momma here. This is my second GD pregnancy and even thought I was expecting it, I was still emotional in the beginning.

First remember: GD isn't something you caused. We are just all unlucky that during pregnancy our hormones/placenta cause difficulty processing glucose.

For a lot of women, it's about balancing your meals with complex carbs, good protein and fat. Snacks are also important. Exercise like walking can be very helpful. It takes some trial and error to figure out what your body can tolerate, so try your best not to get frustrated. And it will probably change as you get further into your pregnancy, so you may have to keep making adjustments.

good luck! there are a lot of us here and April 2014 has a really long GD check-in thread with lots of info.

  • Thank you all again! I really appreciate all the kind words and advice. I still don't know when I meet with the specialist. It appears to be a hurry up and wait situation.
