Perks of an October Baby

I also love October... it's the best weather! LO's birthday parties will always be during the nice time of the year, so you can have it at your home and have a mix of people inside and outside.

I'm so excited to take my 12 weeks of FMLA and have basically the entire holiday season off work to stay home with LO.

So many things to be excited for...

Anything to add??

  • Fall is the best season. Also, Scorpio babies are cool.
  • I agree with the holiday part!  Also, I like that I can do birthday and Christmas shopping at the same time (with DD I do Christmas and birthday at the same time so it is an expensive time of year!).

But the weather in Chicago is iffy in mid October so I'm not thrilled about that!

  • I'm happy that we have the slightest chance of not being hugely pregnant when it's sweltering out...but I keep thinking of how I melted at my September 6th Wisconsin Wedding last year, and how it's a total toss up.

I think it could be nice to have the holidays with a newborn. We're hoping it'll be the perfect excuse to demand that our parents come visit us for thanksgiving! But we split thanksgiving and Christmas last year thinking we'd do the opposite this year, and there's no way my parents will let us miss Christmas now without a fight. I'm kind of dreading it, actually.

  • Hello pink/opal birthstones!!!!

My favorite part is the birthstones. I looked up that October has two (not sure why) and I have always loved opals. I do like the color pink, too. The only downside is if I have a boy...not sure how he will feel about his birthstone ;)

Since I'm due EARLY October (like 9/29 early) I will really be stretching it if I wait to go back to work after the holidays. I've already calculated it out that if I go back the first week after NYE - I will have taken 14 weeks off. Not sure how well that will go. I've been debating going back PT just before Xmas because I know my work will be SUPER slow and quiet for those weeks around the holidays. It'd be a nice way to ease back into fulltime status.

  • Mine and DH's birthday is in October and it really is the best. I'm excited for this LO! His/her siblings have a January and July birthday, lol.

Has anyone ever read Outliers ? It's a book about small differences in childhood that may lead to success as adults. Anyway, one of the small differences that seems to make a big difference is a birthday that falls later in the calendar year, because the child will start school a year later and therefore will be physically and intellectually more developed than his/her peers.

So not quite as fun as pretty leaves and pumpkin pie and snuggling, but interesting! We weren't trying for this (we decided to start trying once the savings account hit a certain number, romantic I know...), but we did both read the book and thought it was cool!

Interesting! I hadn't even thought about that. I will add that to my reading list- I've heard it's good!
  • We'll be able to eat again for the holidays!
YES!!!! With DS I was ginormous for Thanksgiving and Christmas. And so nauseous.

My birthday is 12/31 so I had to start late.  I didn't like being older than my classmates and I missed the friends that I had been in preschool with before they went to school without me.  I also turned 18 before most of my friends so that was pretty lame also.  But I was always a good student.  Until college and pitchers of beer happened.  Just saying.
  • I love the fall with all the colorful trees and leaves. Baby pictures will be the best!

I agree about the maternity leave. I am a teacher and with Thanksgiving break and Christmas break I should have 50 days saved up so I should be able to miss and not have to go back until January! *fingers crossed*

I guess it helps too that I babysat for my OB and my future pediatricians for 11 years. They've already joked that they would write me off that I don't have to return to work until January. ;)

  • October is absolutely my favorite month, so I'm thrilled about an October baby.  My husband's birthday is in October and our anniversary is too (see: favorite month).  Other reasons I'm excited:  I'll be able to take off work all through the holidays, family will have to travel here on the holidays, I will basically only have to buy summer maternity clothes (warm climate means I'll be okay through most of October with some extra cardigans etc), I won't be huge in the worst part of summer, and next year the baby will be in the relatively "easy," non-newborn/non-walking phase for most of next summer which will make him/her very portable for things like baseball games and concerts.

  • I'm curious if I get extra days because of the holiday days, or if its still only 12 weeks.

It is going to suck having a newborn in cold and flu season.

An October bday isn't terrible, but I'm really curious where you live that the weather is always awesome in October. It's pretty unpredictable everywhere I've ever lived-  either on Halloween you are freezing your butt off bc it was 80 deg the week previously, or you are melting because of a heat wave.  It's never routinely nice.  Even now that I live in S.CA, October is when it starts to get cold.

And we get to swelter all summer.

I just got the 12 weeks holidays didn't add to it, it was great I normally work every holiday! Same here with the October weather in NY , you never know what your going to get.

  • I'm due Octoebr 29 and our billable year resets November 1.  So, I'll have a chance to get all my hours in and get to full bonus before I start on leave.  Then I get to be on leave all through the holidays and have that time totally uninterrupted with my family.  We could even go visit my parents out of state for Thanksgiving, which we never do because of work obligations.  And hopefully the baby will be early enough not to be a teeny, tiny super newborn in the middle of cold and flu season like my first daughter was, being born at the end of December.  That was miserable.

  • The majority of b-days in my family are June-August, so we're happy to have stuff to celebrate in October. This was the same reasoning we used when picking our wedding date, which was also in October.

I'm super excited to dress up a newborn for Halloween too!

  • As a nurse in a hospital, I have to work every other holiday. This would be my year for Christmas. I'm pretty excited l will be off the entire holiday season! I was trying to plan it this way! I don't plan on going back until after the first of the year.

  • I agree that it will be nice to dress up baby in a cute teeny tiny halloween costume. It will also be nice to be inside during the cold months and be off for the holidays.

I actually would have preferred a late spring baby. I would rather hide the most pregnant months behind sweaters, and then have the chance to get outside and take walks/runs to work off some of that baby weight.

I have a late summer birthday and was always one of the youngest in my class. I actually felt like that helped keep me more motivated to be a good student and keep up with my peers. I never felt behind or like it was horrible to be younger. Everyone else just had to drive me around which meant I didn't have to get a car right away.

In all honesty, I really don't care when I have a baby, as long as it's healthy. I think there are some definite pros and cons to an October baby.
  • Thanks for this! I have been less than excited about the timing. Only because with my history of PPD it's good for me to get out of the house as much as possible. I love taking baby for walks and spending a lot of time outside.
I'm in Canada and October is cold, sometimes with snow. Then there will be a long winter ahead. Hopefully not as unbearably long as this one!

  • I'm happy that LO will get a few newborn months under his/her belt before cold/flu germs are too crazy. DS was born 12/11...we literally spent three plus months in isolation because the germs were so bad and that's what was recommended by multiple health professionals (he had a normally functioning ammunition system- the season was just that bad).

  • Our baby is due around Cdn Thanksgiving! Stat holiday for DH & family to enjoy with us, AND birthday parties will always be a turkey affair. Mmmm
  • I have mixed feelings. We were going to plan to have another spring baby. It was great to take long walks on maternity leave. And the extra sunlight was nice for early mornings. But then oops, got preggo 8 months early. I am dreading being stuck inside if the cold comes right away. And I had already planned a 2 week trip that I won't cancel for august prior to finding out! So I have less paid time off than I'd want. But as a pro it will be fun to go through holidays as a family of (yikes!) four! And I felt left out of a lot of fun summer stuff with LO since I had a newborn then. So at least everyone else will be hibernating too! (I'm in Wi).

  • Being able to swim the whole summer. With my boys both being born in August I had to stay out of the pool for the second half of summer because of the 6-week post partum rule.

I really love bring pregnant over the summer. Flip flops, swimming, I didn't have to buy a lot of maternity stuff because some shorts and tank tops still fit. Then when baby comes, October has such nice weather for taking baby out.

  • This isn't true in my school system. Kids born in the last months of the year are actually the youngest and therefore least developed. The cutoff here for the school year is December. So January babies are the oldest in their class...I took it into account with my first, but after a miscarriage I quit caring about when and I'm just happy with whatever happens! It's an interesting read though!

  • I was hoping to be pregnant in the fall. I wanted to wear boots and sweater dresses. Not looking forward to being pregnant in the summer. Also I really wanted to wear a zombie belly for Halloween. I am happy to be pregnant though. It wasn't easy to get to this point so I am very greatful.
