3rd Trimester

I can't find relief! Someone give me advise!

Who can relate:

I have an incredible amount of rib pain under my left breast - like a burning pain. Back pain all over the freaking place! Out of breath. Runny nose. Hip pain. Should I continue?

Is there any magic trick any of you might know how to fix this!? I'm 27 weeks and I'm getting worried that I still have a ways to go!

Re: I can't find relief! Someone give me advise!

  • Nope it's the everyday pains. I have had the pain under my left rib and it hurts so bad now all day every day it feels bruised to the touch. I think it's a body part someone will not move. So it's just gets worse from here on out I hate to tell you.

  • Unfortunately, the only way most of your symptoms will go away is to have the baby.  I know that's not helpful, but pregnancy is just uncomfortable.

Here are a few things that worked for me:

    - Bra extenders seemed to help the rib pain a little bit, since my bra bands were digging in right where the pain was.  You can also try ice packs or heating pads.  Slouching isn't good either, so try to sit up straight and even stick your belly out a little bit.  If you have an exercise ball, try getting down on your knees with your upper body draped over the ball.

    - Hip Pain: Sitting on an exercise ball can help some.  Are you sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs?  That might help.

    - Back Pain:  Warm showers or baths help.  Pre-natal massage is good, you might try a chiropractor.

I've found that my symptoms vary a lot with the position of the baby.  As he shifts around, my aches and pains change.  The good news is that so far no major aches and pains have lasted more than a week or so.  The bad news is that once I figure out how to deal with one thing, it goes away and something else pops up that I have to figure out :-)

Thank you for the bra extender idea!

  • I have the same thing but on my right side. I notice it's worse when I sit, like in the car when I'm stuck in traffic. I started some stretches yesterday that seem to help.

  • A warm bath and stretches help me too.  And the pillow between the legs.  I'm still uncomfortable and sleep like crap, but it's better than nothing.  I didn't know they made bra extenders!  My ribs have expanded like crazy this pregnancy but my boobs never do, plus killer heartburn, so I hate wearing bras these days!

You can get them just about anywhere -- I think I found mine at Target.  They come 3 to a pack (black, white, and nude), and they come in 2-hook and 3-hook versions.  Each pack is like $6 or $7. It made a HUGE difference :-)

  • Just a suggestion - the burning pain under your ribs could actually be heartburn/indigestion. Try a strong antacid and see if that helps.

  • Thank you all for the advice!!
  • Wow! I thought I had it bad! I had migraines and was getting sick for 6 months straight, then had headaches and nausea all the way til the end. I had back aches, rib aches (on and off although), hard to breathe, etc.

The good news is, as soon as baby was out, literally within an hour, all of that went away. I know it will be that way for you too.

What helped in the mean time was I kept active, stretching/moving.
I got great tips from a book I read "My baby hijacked my body, now I want it back"; I bought it from www.postpregnancyrehab.com. It had great stretches I would do everyday, and it helped ease my back and leg pains. It was actually a blessing in disguise because it had a recovery program for the mom muscles (to put it politely), after having a baby too.

Either way, just know that it WILL get better!

Prenatal yoga is fantastic for a lot of the aches and pains. Check out youtube. I use a dvd but someone recently uploaded the whole workout to youtube, it's by Desi Bartlett if you're interested.

Pillow support at night also makes a world of difference. I love my Snoogle but a regular body pillow or just extra pillows between your legs and to support your belly can help too.

For the runny nose, there's not a whole lot be done there. A humidifier and saline spray can help dryness. If you get stuffed up overnight, I found Breathe Right strips really helpful for keeping things open wider so that I could actually breathe.

Hang in there. A couple more months and it's over!

  • I have had chronic rib, chest and back pain since the beginning of the 2nd trimester.

I agree with all suggestions from PP especially ice pack & heat. DH puts an ice pack over my ribs & one on my back & then wraps an ace bandage around me. It helps a lot.

I also have been using a lacrosse ball to loosen my back muscles....I lay on the floor with a pillow under my head & one under my knees & put the ball wherever it hurts. I usually lay on the ball ( moving it around to different spots) for about 20 min each night!

Hope you find some relief soon. I just keep telling myself that it will all be worth it in the end!

  • Regarding your rib pain- it SUCKS. I am 37 weeks and I have had it for nearly the past 6 weeks. I have found some relief:

Use an ice pack on the area it hurts.. The ice helps the pain and the baby will squirm a lot which kind of takes your mind off of the pain for a little while.
Lie on the side opposite the pain to allow gravity to do its job
Try a bra without under wire if possible. I have large breasts and I take my supportive bra off as soon as I get home and change to a nursing bra with no under wire.
Try prenatal yoga- I love it!

Some good news- I have recently "dropped" and the pain is much less severe.

    Good luck!
  • I had the burning pain under my ribs with ds and I turned out to have the start of preeclampsia. May want to mention it to your doc just to be safe.
  • lurking from 2nd tri

    I feel you. I am 26 weeks almost 27.

My nose is always stuffed up.  Humidifier helps at night.  My sternum hurts quite a bit. I have read that it could be heartburn.  It is like a burning sensation there.  I have never had heartburn so I was not sure.  I just got Tums today to see if that helps.  I see my Dr in 2 weeks so I will mention it to him since even pushing on that area hurts it.

Body pillow helps, I sleep w part of it under between my legs.

I also have carpel tunnel in both wrists and a burning sensation in my thigh.  I mentioned to Dr and he said it is like sciatica but in your thigh.  It burns sometimes so bad it will wake me up out of a dead sleep.

The past few days I have been sleeping on the couch sitting up, seems to be helping me get some rest since I wake up many times during the night when I sleep in bed.  The past few nights I have actually got some sleep with sleeping upright on the couch.  Luckily my couch reclines so my feet are up.

I cant afford massages or yoga so I am doing what I can.  Mention the burning sensation to your Dr just in case.

We are redoing our bathroom it will be done the end of next week.  I so cant wait so I can actually take a nice bath!!!

Good luck, feel better, you are not alone!!

  • @dragonfly711 There are tons of yoga workouts for free on youtube. Just search prenatal yoga. It's worth a try for a bit of relief.
