Cloth Diapering

Best Bottom lovers/users

I posted last night about our leaky newborn diapers and we decided to try out a BB shell with small insert for night time and it held up perfectly for DD's 5-hour long stretch at night. Woo hoo!

I only have 3 BB inserts (smalls/green edge) but I would like to buy more. Is the absorbency of the smalls outgrown pretty quickly? DD just turned a month old and I'm trying to decide if I should buy more smalls or go ahead and just get mediums so we don't grow out of them in another month and have to buy again.

  • I am, except that I have no smalls. I didn't start using them till later, so all I have are larges. I will say I don't think it's worth getting mediums. Thy are almost the exact same size as the larges. So my suggestion would be to get more smalls, then skip to larges. Maybe also experiment with cotton/hemp vs. stay dry. A doubler plus hemp holds up overnight for my toddler.

  • I have all 3 sizes as well as a combo of stay dry and hemp. We didn't ever outgrow the small absorbency, and just moved up to using mediums because we went up a rise snap. I typically like the stay dry top with a hemp doubler (so perhaps the opposite of @tj1979 if she likes the hemp top with either a hemp or stay dry doubler??). I just found the stay dry to seem more comfortable for LO overnight, but the hemp doubler underneath absorbs so much, so that's the combo I like. I also agree that there isn't much difference size-wise between the medium and large inserts. Though I sometimes have to stuff mediums into the shell on the second rise to avoid the insert touching the elastic waist, so I'm not sure if you skip to larges and you're still on the middle rise snap if you'll have some leaking if the large insert is laying over/touching the elastic waist band. Also, by doubler I really mean "overnight insert," which is thicker than the actual "doubler." I don't own any of the doublers. I use one insert during the day, and use overnight inserts along with regular inserts overnight.

  • I have been using large inserts on the middle rise for like a year now. You just have to make sure it's all tucked in. It fits if you are careful.

  • My ds was almost to the lower limit for the medium inserts when I found BB so I skipped the smalls and just ordered the mediums.  I didn't have any issues with skipping the smalls since the medium ones fit on both of the two middle rise settings and ds was on the smaller of the two middle settings when we started.

  • Oh, I suppose I should also say that ds is a light/normal wetter so I have never had a need to order doublers or overnight inserts so I can't provide an opinion on those.

I have both types and I never had any issues with either one (as long as I washed in Tide) until recently when I got tired of dealing with microfiber and have gone to trying to use natural fibers as much as possible.  Ds is still able to use the medium inserts I bought almost a year ago (small boy).

Same here, no problems with the absorbency, the MF smalls were just too small fit wise with the shell unsnapped one on the rise (the Hemp inserts are thinner but cut slightly bigger and have a little bit of stretch to the material.  My hemp smalls still fit into the shell decently with the rise unsnapped one).  On the other hand you have to bunch up the mediums to get them to fit into the smallest setting (and similarly bunch up the larges to fit the medium settings) which I really didn't like doing.

  • I have mediums for A and larges for J I feel like they absorb the same. I think the smalls look/feel just as absorbant too.

I went with mediums, because, A was already 10lbs. In a pinch I can technically make the larges work for him too (middle rise), but it bunches a lot more.
