Parenting after a Loss

Can you feed too much?

DD is 10 weeks old. We had been feeding her 4 to 6 oz 6 times a day. She has been eating once in the middle of the night for about 2 weeks, somewhere between 12 and 2. This morning she got up about 4:30 and would not go back down. DH fed her at 1:30 and he woke me up to feed her at 5:30 because he needed to get ready and nothing was working. So today she will get 7 feedings. If I feed her as I normally do for the rest of the day, she will be getting more than 32oz, which is the high end of what the ped recommended for her age. I feel like we are going to feeding her too much, is that possible? Does it really matter? We don't go back to the ped until her 4 month well check. Is this something I should call about? I wanted to ask here first.

Re: Can you feed too much?

  • M will take down 10oz with DH sometimes. I asked the pedi at her 6 month check-up. He said if it's staying down, it's fine. That being said, I think at over 8oz she starts feeling discomfort from being overly full.

  • @twotexans She isn't spitting up any more than normal. It always just flows out and she doesn't notice. She did however poop 3 times this morning alone. She had been a once a day pooper before. I don't think that really makes a difference.

@esd We are formula feeding. We make 6 oz bottles. Sometimes she takes 4, sometimes 5, sometimes 6 or anywhere in between.

I was always told by my pedi to feed on demand. My babies were always on the bigger side but my pedi was never concerned about their weight. Like others have said, it could be a growth spurt. You can call anyway if anything to ease your mind.

  • I agree with PP and say it's probably a growth spurt.  I would think that if she "overate" at that age, she'd throw up.
  • That seems normal to me. My son is 11 weeks and eats anywhere from 30-40 ounces of formula on average, sometimes more. He is a big boy, (about 15lbs) but he's not chunky. My pedi says feed on demand and is not at all concerned with his weight.

  • Totally normal in my experience with both my boys.  There were times when we'd feed 6oz and an hour later feed another 4oz during growth spurts!  I was always worrying about over feeding, too, but my ped assured me as long as they are keeping it down, it's best to feed on demand.  Of course, I would always try other things first, but if all else fails and they were rooting and fussing, I offered a bottle.  I remember with DS1 there was a point for like 4-5 weeks where he was taking close to 36oz a day of formula (6-6oz bottles).   He was a hungry babe, but his growth was always perfectly fine.
