What do you guys think?

I was just looking at our realtor website. I found a perfect house for us in our price range!! 3 bedroom 2 bathroom on 10 acres. The only catch is its 30 miles away from where we work. Would this be a deal breaker for you?

  • It would be somewhat of a deal breaker for me.

  • Considering I have an 85km commute now, it wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me.  Though, you'd have to look at the commute time vs distance.  Is it 30 miles on the highway/freeway or 30 miles through the city/traffic?  Mine's all highway so it takes me 50 minutes door-to-door.
  • My house is about 35 miles from where I work.  I actually don't think I have ever worked somewhere closer than that to where I live, except for my PT job in college.

So if that's the only downside- I say look at it!

  • Nope, I work about 30 miles away. It's not that big of a deal to me when I really like the place that I live-- it makes it worthwhile. For a few extra hours a week in the car, I live in a great neighborhood, great neighbors, really good schools, convenient and reliable daycare and extra low insurance rates. Though time definitely has a value, the rewards of living in a great home far outweigh it for me.

Also, no one duct tapes my dog doors shut. :)

  • It would be highway time. I could take the highway or a back road to work. I just told DH and he said he doesn't want to drive that far.... But i'm still showing him the listing tonight.

We bought our house with intentions to fix it up and sell it. We have been "browsing" houses lately nothing in stone.
  • Here was my experience...
I had a 27 mile commute when I lived in MA. Because of traffic, that drive took over an hour each way. Once DD was in Kindergarten and had to go to an after school program in the town we lived in, it was IMPOSSIBLE. I had to drop her off at school by 8 am to get to work by 9:15 and then had to haul ass outta there at 5pm to hopefully make it in time to pick her up before the center closed (and was often late, at the cost of $1 per MINUTE).

So IMHO, a 30 mile commute would be a dealbreaker for me. But that's just because of my awful experience.

  • Well it's a no go anyway just called the realtor and it recently went under contract :( BOO
  • Depends on the area.  In SoCal, it would absolutely have been a deal breaker - that would have been at least an hour each way for commute.  In some places, it might be 30 minutes... I'd consider it, but I'd rather be closer to a city than have so much land myself.

  • DH commutes 63 miles one way and his drive is just less than an hour with traffic, it works for us. If it's perfect I say why not?! :)

  • No, we live about 30 miles from DH's work and 20 miles from mine. It takes him about 30 minutes to get there because he goes at a time when there is no traffic. It takes me about an hour because of traffic, sometimes longer if there is an accident. Around here, it's common to live 30 miles from work, but it's worth it to live in a nice area.
