Ditching the Sippy

When your LO learned to drink out of a regular cup, did you go cold turkey and withhold sippy cups altogether (assuming you transitioned)? Also, do you allow access to the regular cup all day long? independently? only with your help at first? only at meal times and snack? I've been kind of winging it this morning, and so far DS thinks the cup is just a new toy. He will hold it up to his mouth and just grin rather than tipping it up and taking a swallow. I think we're going to move the party to the bathtub in a little bit just so I have a little less to mop, especially with our fantastic never-ending ant invasion.

We transition. We let him have about 2 inches of water in a cup & he loves water. But if he's walking through the house with juice or milk we still give him his sippy.

Also, do you allow access to the regular cup all day long? My mom does at her house through the week. We just give him the cup when he's in his high chair.

independently? only with your help at first? We helped at first but then he got busy saying, "I can do it!" Lol. Which I guess is a good sign.

Have you seen this cup? We used both. There will still be spills but it does help train.

Dangit. Something about the link isn't working right for me. It's the Phillips Avent Free Natural drinking cup. $4.81 at Amazon.

  • DS transitioned to a cup at DC a couple of weeks ago. I tried it at home and it didn't go well. Then I saw him do it successfully at DC so I ordered the same cups that DC has from Amazon.

Little 8 oz plastic tumblers like in restaurants: https://amzn.com/B009KB3CPU

    They also come in clear.

I'll only use these at meal times, though. Straw cups the rest of the time and out and about.
  • My mom uses the same cups @cedenton uses. They are perfect for toddler hands.

  • I'm not there yet. But I think we'll just do an open cup in the kitchen / dining room. And then we both can have our own straw water bottle of water in other rooms. Just to keep down the mess.

  • I have no intention of fully transitioning anytime soon since DS thinks it's funny to pour liquid all over himself whenever he's given an open cup.  I do let him sip from my cup, though, and he loves it. And sometimes I'll give him just 1/4" of water in a cup and he'll drink it. He still uses his straw cup 95% of the time.
  • After a few attempts where he just kind of grinned at the cup, I put it up until lunch time. By then he was good and thirsty, so he was ready to drink out of it. It was still a big mess, but his bib caught most of it. I think silicone pocket bibs are one of the best inventions ever!

  • my kid isn't even 8 months yet, so feel free to ignore what I say, but I want to skip sippy cups and go straight to regular cups. As a transition we are introducing reflo cups. It really slows down the flow so he isn't drenched, but still learns how to drink like normal. We still help, and he gets it only at solids meals. But knows that is where the water is and how to drink from it. I really like them.

  • We actually had her drinking out of our cups first. Then small amounts in her own. Now we do cups for meals. And sippy cups around the house.

  • DS 2 yrs would drink with his mouth closed a lot so the water would pour straight over his face. Lol. He got tired of being wet & still thirsty so he figured it out. ;)
