Would you buy a pump at this point?

I am still at home with A and I will be for 3-4 more months. Until now I used a manual pump if I ever needed to pump anything. She does not take bottles.

I was considering buying a Medela Pump in Style.I would like to have a small supply of breastmilk at home so every time I want to mix it in her oatmeal or give her some in a cup I don't have to pump it right then. Also, I would like to increase the supply on one side.

I plan on having one more baby so it would be used again. We want to start trying in the fall of this year.

The PIS will cost around $349 plus tax and that is what is holding me back. Spending almost $400 after tax on something I will only use a few months makes my feel guilty. I don't usually spend money on things for myself. (As much as a pump can be for myself)

Would anyone bother buying a good pump at this point? Would you just get a cheaper pump and hope for the best?

Edit My insurance does not cover a pump at all.

  • I have a cheaper brand (insurance provided) and a manual pump but ended up buying a Medela PIS. I was amazed at the difference and I'm happy I spent the money.

If you plan on using it again, I say go ahead and buy it but you can definitely find it a little cheaper. I've seen it less on Amazon, $249.
  • Thanks! I am in Canada and I have not been able to find it cheaper than $349. I tried online but I will check Amazon, if they ship it here.

  • I do plan on breastfeeding until around 2 unless she wants to stop sooner.
  • I am on my way to the mall right now so I will be sure to stop in to BRU.
  • I would get it. Or you could look into renting a hospital grade pump, especially if you are planning on using it to increase production

  • I would go for it. It sounds like you're planning on getting a significant amount of use from it with this LO. Plus you're planning for another LO, so I think it will be worth it for you long term.

  • Thanks to everyone for replying. @KateRN08‌ I checked at work but we switched companies and they don't cover pumps at all. Our coverage in many other ways is amazing so I won't complain too much. Thank you for the warranty info.
  • I wouldn't because my DD weaned herself one day and I don't think I would take the time to pump everyday. However you may have more self dicipline than I do. :)

  • I would buy one. If you're planning on nursing until your LO is 2 and you're planning on having another baby, you'll get a lot of use out of it. I love my Pump in Style. I've been pumping 2X a day at work still and couldn't imagine not having it even if I wasn't working. It's amazing compared to the manual one.
  • I would get one if you're planning on having another baby that soon. Just check around for deals!
