Babies: 3 - 6 Months

baby not smiling

Hi everyone- I hope someone else is going through this (or has gone through this). My baby turns 3 months today on the13th and rarely smiles. I made the mistake of googling and now I am panicked about Autism. Someone please let me know how long it took their babies to smile and if they took them to the doctor because of this issue...

thanks!

Re: baby not smiling

  • Agreed, babies all develop on their own timelines. If your LO was early she may take longer to reach milestones than others. And some babies just take longer no matter what. Try not to worry. LO's pedi should ask you questions at LOs 4 month checkup such as if she's smiling yet. At that time if LO's pedi will let you know if theres anything to be concerned about.

  • My baby started non responsive smiling and smiling in her sleep her sleep around a few weeks old but started responsive smiling e.g. Smiling at me because I do something she likes around 2 or 3 months, I can't remember to be exact.
  • My LO was born at 36 weeks and was slow to smile. He didn't start socially smiling until closer to 4 months. I also googled it and felt panicky about Autism. LO smiles all the time now. I wish I hadn't googled - I spent so much time worrying and not enjoying LO. Nothing can be diagnosed this early anyway, so I'm trying to put the worry away. Of course, you should discuss it with your pedi if LO isn't smiling by his 4 month appointment, but learn from my mistake and enjoy this time with your LO. :)

  • Like egsquared LO was early (37weeks) and was a late smiler. I also googled and panicked about Autism. At his 2 month check up I was told to not worry and bring it up at the 4 month appointment and wish I had done that instead of googling bc by 4 months he was smiling up a storm.
