Caffeine

Anyone else consuming caffeine and if so how much? I don't drink coffee and honestly don't consume that much caffeine compared to a lot of people, but I really can't live without my one can of vanilla coke a day!!! Thoughts?!

Re: Caffeine

  • The accepted wisdom is that 200-300 mg a day is fine for pregnant women, and I personally wouldn't make it through my days without caffeine especially since my 14 month old still wakes up several times a night.

Thank you @SweetMelissa5 !!! That makes me feel much better!!
  • I have coffee whenever I want it and haven't thought twice about it. I only have about 3- 6 oz a day though.

  • I've cut down to one cup of half caf coffee.in the morning. Its slowly killing me. Maybe I need to add in a midday Pepsi or something.

  • I have one sometimes two smaller cups of coffee a day. Just google your drink and find out how much caffeine it has. If it is under 250mg it's fine.

  • I try to cut down on caffeine, but I would be fine drinking a cup or two of coffee or some pop if I need it.

  • I love coffee so much but ever since Around the time of implantation I haven't been able to to stomach it so I'm not drinking it even if I wanted to. Certain coffees have more caffiene than others- light roast at Starbucks for example has quite a lot compared to an espresso drink. Sounds like your coke is fine!

  • I switched to decaf... haven't noticed much of a difference.  I didn't drink coffee for the caffeine in the first place though.  I just really like coffee.  I'd be more worried about the other stuff in the coke than the caffeine...

  • I have been a coffee drinker since before I started school. My first cup was milk with a dash of sugar & just a splash of coffee in a dainty tea cup, of course, but by the time I was 16 it was x-large & black. So, there is no way I could give it up completely. My body tells me when I've had enough - even before I peed on a stick, I just couldn't bring myself to finish that second mug, even though some weekends we would start a second pot. Now I know why... and am sticking to it!
  • I have one cup in the morning. If I feel like I start to drag throughout the day I will have a decaf. I really try to
Stick to 200-300 mg a day which is the equivalent of a 12 oz cup.

  • I gave it up completely. After my early loss last time it scared me so bad that I just can't do it. I know it probably had nothing to do with my loss, I still stayed under the 200 mg rule, but I'm terrified now.

I have been drinking caffeine.  I have about two to three cups of ice tea each day, but I've been trying to make it weak.  I gave up diet soda, which is a huge thing for me.

My 18 month old still wakes up several times a night.  I couldn't survive without caffeine.

ETA: when I was pregnant with DS, I had a can or two of coke every day.  The caffeine content in it is fairly low, so I wouldn't worry about it.  I'm trying not to drink coke this pregnancy because I gained 40 pounds with DS, and I still haven't lost 20 of it.  I don't want to gain that much this time around.

  • I switched to decaf coffee,  but its becoming difficult to hide it from my coworker when she is used to me drinking my half of the pot.   ha ha.....I tried to drink some of the coffee yesterday,  and it tasted so gross to me......so either I am used to the decaf,  or the Folgers Black Silk with 10 scoops is just too much for me now.    ha ha ha ha !

Not sure whats worse......I read somewhere that decaf may actually be worse than drinking one cup of regular coffee because of the process used to remove the caffeine from the coffee.    I should research a little better I guess   :)

  • I have 2 mugs of coffee in the morning. Occasionally I'll have another 1/2 mug in the afternoon to fight the 4 pm drag. Seriously, if we weren't allowed coffee, I might not be pregnant right now.

  • Before pregnancy I was drinking 24-32 oz of coffee a day.  So reducing to 12-16 oz is like death warmed over.  But since this is the 3rd baby, I can say that after the first trimester you start to function slowly without as much caffiene.

  • Before my BFP I was drinking 10-20oz of caffeine a day. Now i'm limiting myself to one 8oz cup a day. I get nasty migraines if I don't have caffeine in the morning, and I really don't need that on top of all the other symptoms I have already.

  • I have a half-caf cup of coffee in the morning and usually an ice tea later in the day. Expecting Better has an interesting chapter on caffeine intake during pregnancy. The 200mg recommendation many women get is actually pretty conservative. I do plan to cut out all caffeine before the birth. I plan to breastfeed again and a newborn on caffeine isn't fun for anyone.

  • I'll have a cup in the morning before work, sometimes 2 on my days off. About once a week one of my employees will bring me a coffee in the morning when she & I open together. I'll probably keep this same routine unless my doctor suggests otherwise.

With my daughter, I completely gave up coffee/tea/soda -- I was completely wiped out all the time. I can't function at work feeling like that!

  • Ohh how I love my coffee!!! Used to drink about two cups a day, but my coffee is half creamer. Now I am trying for just one cup the mornings I work. But I am getting headaches when I don't have my morning coffee. Hopefully those will stop before I get any more pregnancy symptoms.
  • I still have a cup of coffee a day.  I drank coffee throughout my previous two pregnancies, no way could I go with out it!
  • Before I got pregnant I drank 2-3 cups a day. I planned to allow myself a cup a day during pregnancy but it just hurts my stomach and doesn't really sound good to me. So I just drink it if I really need it, which has only been a couple of times so far.

  • Mountain Dew is like crack to me. LOL So I am switching to one Faygo Moon Mist (similar in taste) and it only has about 20mg of caffiene in it as opposed to Mountain Dew, which is 44. Would like to give it up all together but cold turkey is a recipe for disaster.

@vbchick0788 I have long been a Diet Mt. Dew fiend - in cans.  I gave it up (because of the aspertame) when pregnant with DS, and gave it up again for this pregnancy.  I've been drinking the Kroger brand cans of sparkling seltzer water in lemon lime flavor, trying to kid myself that it's Diet Mt. Dew.  It kind of works.  I now get my caffeine from tea because I don't want the chemicals in diet soda.

  • I drink a coffee every morning, one cup, and then a coke later in the day but after thinking about it, I'm going to try and switch to ice tea.
  • I calculated that one cup of coffee and one Dr. Pepper a day puts me right at 200mg! I did recently switch to swapping one tbsp of my regular coffee with one tbsp of decaf so I'm losing 1/4 of the caffeine in my cup. So far so good!
  • I cut it out for the negative effects it has on your body and am using herbal energizing teas instead. I had a sip of decaf today and it tasted nasty to me anyways. I may have some chocolate every now and again though ;) I will sy I have been dragging but I think that has to do more with fatigue from being pregnant than caffeine withdrawal.

  • I am still drinking one cup of coffee per day (down from three) and an occasional coke in the afternoon. I never get enough sleep, so I need that coffee desperately.
  • I'm a total coffee addict. I wake up at 4 am for work, and usually drink 3 cups a day. Since my BFP I have tried to quit cold turkey, but might look into the half-caf thing because it's killing me.

  • I have a single espresso shot latte every morning.  I have a cup of coffee every afternoon between 3-4pm to keep me from snoozing at my desk or in meetings.  I would say I cut my intake by about half.

  • I am stilling drinking my two cups of coffee a day but i drink my coffee a half a cup of coffee or a little less and fill the rest of the cup up with milk.

Haha, I'm the exact opposite! I switch to decaf coffee while TTC, so I'm off caffeine for now. (I'll add some bad in when I hit 2nd try, like ice tea occasionally.) But when DS was born, luckily caffeine didn't seem to interrupt his sleep patterns, because I was drinking several cups a day when he was a newborn. I don't know how I could have functioned without it!

  • Looks like I'm going to have to cut out all caffeine. Had a heart condition all my life that was made much worse by my pregnancy With DS. One half caff coffee put me in the hospital once. Had a surgery after I gave birth and have felt great since. I was really hoping this pregnancy would be different... but I'm having episodes already. Looks like no caffeine for me... again. Ugh.

Yes. Talk to your doctor about it if you're truly concerned, but a cup of coffee is fine.
