Cloth Diapering

NCDR re switching to solids at a year.

I would ask my BMB but I like you better and I think I would have a better sampling here.

Logan will turn one in a month (eek!) and I don't know how to switch him over. He eats one or two solid meals a day and isn't good with a cup yet. (I have to hold it for him). I'll admit I could be way better with teaching him and giving him more solids. I am bad about eating throughout the day, so this is going to be a huge lifestyle change.

Do you switch gradually at one?

With our schedule now, I think he will get a bottle when he wakes at 8am because he goes back to bed after that and a diaper change. Should I switch that to milk or keep with the formula?

Any helpful tips?

  • We did cold turkey. No bottles, 3 meals, and 2 snacks. Took about 3-4 days for the to get it and get used to it, but it was pretty easy. Like pulling off a bandaid.

  • We were completely opposite. I nursed E till 16 months, we slowly weaned from BM to WCM over a month by mixing the two. She say with us at meals from 6 months and eats however much she wants, or doesn't if she doesn't.

  • If I remember correctly, we transitioned gradually. I still kept his morning and evening bottles (with formula) but switched him to sippy cups with milk or water throughout the day. He didn't like the change a lot at first, but it got better. I made sure to keep the foods he really liked on hand to get him used to eating bigger quantities, and I didn't worry a whole lot in the beginning about spoiling him by giving him all his favorite foods. Once he was accustomed to eating bigger meals, I upped the ante and relied less on the favorites. I think for DS it took about a week to completely drop bottles altogether, but he was an eager solid eater. He also took well to the sippy cups with silicone tops that were similar to his bottles. The Nuk Active cup was his favorite.

  • DS is turning one tomorrow! But I intro'd WCM a few days ago. Not much, maybe 3-4oz a day right now while I'm gone, or we're out. We've done BLW since 6mo, and sometimes he eats a ton. Other times he's more interested in throwing food on the floor. I'm not in a rush to wean, but being pregnant I wanted to make sure he'd take WCM at least. I think right now I'm just trying to make sure he gets 2 snacks a day in addition to the 3 meals he already does. Also, a part of me is going to miss it being so easy to feed him while we're out. All I had to do was give him a boob.
  • DD was fully on solids and WCM in a sippy at a year old. But, she was eating nearly as much as an adult at some meals at that point, so I knew she was getting a balanced diet and wasn't going hungry.

The sippy transition took about 2 weeks and I started her at 11 months old because she was really into the bottle so I thought it was going to take forever. She resisted the sippy initially because she thought it was water - I had to take the lid off and show her that it wasn't. She was holding her own bottle at that point, though, so having her hold the sippy wasn't a problem.

I had a similar issue with not having much of a personal eating schedule during the day, so it was hard to remember at first that it was time for lunch. I just had to make it a priority to sit at the table with DD and eat something with her. And then it got way easier to just do a regular meal because if I snacked or ate anything outside of a mealtime DD would invariably want some of whatever i was eating.

  • Thanks for the replies!

I think with him switching over, it will force me to eat better, which is good. It's hard not to be lazy! ;)

I really need to work with the cup. He is going to be really thirsty if we don't figure it out. He's a quick learner, so I'm not too worried.

What do you feed your kids? I want to have more balanced food for him, not a bunch of carbs.

  • I fall into the carb trap, so each week I try to make myself plan to fix several veggie sides to keep on-hand for DS. He loves tomatoes, steamed broccoli (he calls it "blocky"), green peas, steamed carrots, and cooked squash of any kind. It's harder to get him to eat protein, so I try to get some peanut or almond butter into his breakfast or snack.

  • We do a looooot of frozen mixed veggies with butter. They're not the BEST vegetable option, but they're handy and my daughter likes them so it's a go to. She is a little carb junky but I'm of the opinion they need them for their brains. Or at least that's what I tell myself. She also loves whatever I'm eating.

  • It's hard not to feed them a lot of carbs. They love them! His snacks will probably be crackers or something that isn't messy. Breakfast and dinner don't matter since I'm going to change his clothes anyway.

He usually eats what we do for dinner. We had stir fry and he loved it. He drank milk really well out of his straw cup! He loves milk!

  • I bought frozen veggies too. They are quick, easy and don't rot. It's better than no veggies. ;)

  • I like to keep to a pretty good formula. Breakfast is usually a carb, fruit, and protein. So, english muffin, banana, and greek yogurt. Lunch is typically fruit or veggie, carb, and protein. So, peanut butter sammich and some grapes/carrots or quesadilla with shredded carrot and zuchinni in it. Dinner is always protein (typically meat), carb, and veggie. Snacks I stick to cold veggies, fruit, cheese stick, or cheddar bunnies.
