Cloth Diapering

Dumb question, am I changing him often enough?

I've only had DS2 back in his CDs for a few days and he started getting a bum rash yesterday.  He has been in disposables for a few weeks while I got rid of his yeast bum rash.  I believe this rash is a wetness related rash as it is bright pink and red around his bum and up his bum crack where the skin touches itself.
He's in a combination of prefolds and BG OS.  I use 1 TBSP RnG in my top load HE machine. My wash routine is to spray all diapers then they have a hot soak, cold wash (I cannot change this temp) and three cold rinses.

The first two days I wash changing him every 1.5-2 hours unless he fell asleep then he might have gone up to 4 hours.  I would try to have him in a BG if I thought he was going to sleep and would try to get him changed as close to nap as possible but he is still unpredictable.

The rash started to develop a bit yesterday and blew up this morning.  All day today I've been setting a timer and changing him every hour.  He hasn't had any long naps, so he might have gone one 2 hour stretch.

At each change today I've been putting on either coconut oil or CJs BUTTer Plus on his bum.  Prior to today I put them on at every other change. I use cloth wipes with water to clean his bum.

Even when I changed him every hour he always had a small amount of poop in the diaper, I swear he has a leaky bum.  I make sure he dries out completely at each change before I put on the next diaper.  His rash seemed to be getting worse as today went on. I don't know what else I can do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Dumb question, am I changing him often enough?

  • My first thought: It sounds like the reaction that my DD had to her diapers being washed in RnG. Switching detergents (we used Tiny Bubbles and Nellies I both no problems) solved the problem for us after a hot water strip with no detergent.

Does the hot soak agitate and spin, or just drain? It's a necessary step, otherwise the diapers are being washed in dirty water. It could be that the pee is not being rinsed and washed out properly and that the ammonia is irritating his skin. Do the diapers smell after they've been peed in?

    It all revolves around you.

  • What ITK said. I felt like I was constantly battling redness when DS was a NB since he pooped all the time. I felt like no matter how much I changed him, I couldn't keep the poop off his butt. When he eventually started pooping less, it became less of an issue.
  • But give him some diaper free time. Maybe a baking soda or oatmeal bath too.
  • My first thought was the diapers aren't getting clean. My second thought was are you bfing? We had a rash pop up like that and turns out it was me eating pineapple. My only other suggestion would be to use a stay dry liner in the pfs and change add soon as you think he pooped.

  • If he's pooping all the time you need a barrier cream. You might have good luck with lanolin as its thicker, and it washes out in warm water. I'd just put it between his crack and not cover the whole bottom just to be on the safe side though.

Yea, our pedi told us to mix talc powder, desitin, and Vaseline. At least I think it was those things if I'm remembering correctly. Not CD safe tho...
  • A quick hijack. @Chickypoo2468‌ is that stuff in a tube or a tub? Is it cheap enough to leave at daycare?

  • @jcwinsto - I found it in a tube on Amazon, but it looks like it's more expensive that way.

Sorry it took me so long to come back, today was DH's first day home in 1.5 weeks so we had family time and now he's gone again.
The soak cycle agitates and then drains before rinsing if I'm remembering correctly.  I will have to watch it next time to be sure.  I do rinse all my diapers out before they go in the machine to rinse out pee too.
I had mega issues with my BGs when DS1 was in them at the end, lots of ammonia smell and he would turn bright red all over his bum and in the front too.  Once he was PT'd and before DS2 used them I stripped them.  I did notice that yesterday the inserts from the BGs that had pee on them from DS2 smelled like ammonia after being the in the wet bag overnight (planet wise hanging bag that I leave unzipped).
I am EBF'ing him.  He has silent reflux and I cut out dairy 3 weeks ago to try and help him out.  I haven't been eating acidic foods as far as I recall.  I should probably start a food diary to keep track.
I have Grandma El's I could use on him.  I've just been sticking close to the CJ BUTTer Plus because of our recent yeast issues. I've never seen the waxelene here in Canada.  I will have to look to see if they sell it here.
EDIT: I can try a new soap.  What do you suggest? We have a water softener so fairly soft water.

  • Couldn't you just put it in a tube?

I was thinking of doing this. Now I just have to find a tube.

@CopperT0p‌ It kinda starts to sound like an ammonia thing. Maybe try a different detergent. I posted about ammonia the other day and it was suggested to me to soak my diapers for a couple hours in a bucket of warm water with a little bit of vinegar. I did that, washed with Tide, and did a couple extra hour water washes with no detergent. It cleaned my diapers right up.

  • Do you soak everything or just the MF and prefolds? I can handle buying some tide easily enough. My prefolds and RaR cover combination hasn't had any ammonia smells just the BG and their inserts so maybe I only need to treat those?

  • I wouldn't worry about the covers but since you're doing the MF already I would probably go ahead and do the pfs too.

  • Sounds good.  I will give that a try this morning.

  • I did the vinegar soak and tide wash followed by hot stripping today.  It might be my imagination but the inserts seem fluffier from it.  I put him into one of the BGs tonight for sleep so we shall see how it goes.  I hope the rashes stay away.  He is fine in the prefolds but realistically I think he has outgrown them.  Every time he has a big poop while in the RaR/prefolds he leaks because they are so snug it shoots up his back and out the legs

    Buy more diapers!!
  • I wish but I don't think I could convince DH since we had no issues with disposables and have had nothing but issues with CDs for this kid.

This was us too.  I couldn't get his rash to go away for anything until I got some GSE.  I put a few drops with spoonful of coconut oil and mix that in to the water I use for my wipes and his bum has looked awesome since.  Now he poops less and it's not a problem.
  • I wish he'd stop pooping so much!  Today when I was changing him and letting him have some air time, every 1-2 minutes he would have a liquid dribble of poo, just a few drops.  There's no wonder he always has a slightly poopy diaper.
