WDOADT?

What does OAD think?

There is a woman who comes into our office about 2 times a week (for about the past 3 months) and asks the receptionist to use the phone. She makes a personal phone call and then leaves. I told the receptionist she should tell her that the phone is not for public use.... Am i being bitchy?

Re: WDOADT?

  • I would probably tell the receptionist to stop letting her. It's disruptive, plus why can't she use her own phone or a phone in her office?

    So weird!

Is it an office type setting?  If yes- anyone can jusy walk in?

No you are not being bitchy.  Phones are for the employees.

Edit-- duh-- you said it was an office.

  • No.  Where in the world is she coming from?  Another office or something?

We have a receptionist lobby. And she just comes in from the street IDK what she is doing and asks to use the phone.

Then definitely no. It's one thing if it's a client or even a lazy co-worker but your business phones aren't for public personal calls. It's a slippery slope to start letting people do stuff like this. First it's once or twice a week, then you have someone living in your lobby.

  • Not bitchy at all. For one thing, what if she is calling long distance on your company's dime? What if she's conducting some kind of illicit activity? I have lots more what ifs, but you get the idea.

If your receptionist wants to be more than polite about it (because, honestly, a "this is against office policy" should suffice) she could maybe point the woman in the direction of a public pay phone. The are rare but still exist.

  • Umm, that's just weird to walk into a business and use their phone to make personal calls. I would tell the receptionist to tell her no next time.

  • I would definitely talk to the office manager and have him/her deal with it. I don't know if the receptionist would feel comfortable enough saying no after letting her all these times.

  • Not bitchy at all. That would annoy me as well.

I mean its always the same person why not get a cellphone? Is she maybe walking (exercising) but stopping there to make a call is just weird.
