Sudden onset of extreme picky-ness.

Chris is normally a pretty good eater all things considered.  Yes, he's got some issues around what the food's temp should be but otherwise, he eats fruits, veggies, bread, rice, meats without much fuss.

Over the past week or so, that's done a complete 180.

He's refusing things that up until a week or so ago, were his favorite things to eat.  He fights, kicks, cries and if we do manage to get something in his mouth, will gag.

I'm starting to get worried since he's super skinny to begin with - he can't actually afford to lose much weight but the sudden onset of extreme picky-ness, I'm at a loss.

Have any of you ever encountered something like this?

Thanks

Re: Sudden onset of extreme picky-ness.

  • That's been pretty much the better half of DDs life but we have had good luck getting her to gain weight through supplementing with smoothies. I can give you some recipes if you need them.

  • Food chaining was really successful for DD1 when she was in eating therapy for sensoryon aversions and a very limited diet. She was also FTT so with her weight/nutrition concerns she was on Neocate, and also had smoothie and pediasure supplements. We used reusable squeeze pouches with homemade veggie/fruit puree mixes to expand flavors tolerated. She will often slip back into extreme pickiness when ill, fwiw.
  • We've had success with food chaining too.

Also, If the weight is a concern, you can add calories to food that he will eat.  We've added butter under peanut butter on his sandwiches, butter melted in oatmeals, butter under avocado. If it truly becomes a concern, a dietician can provide a powdered calorie booster that can be mixed or baked into items. We've used Duocal to add calories.

  • Food chaining worked well for our son too; he was in feeding therapy for about 6 months when he was 3.

  • With this being such a sudden change in the past week, any chance there's some sort of sickness (sore throat, stomach bothering him, etc.) that might be a factor?

  • Thanks for the food chaining suggestion.  I'd never heard of it and just started to read about it.  I might try it with Chris AND his little brother.  The little guy won't eat anything that isn't a bread/cracker or baby food and he's almost 2!

Macchiato, there may also be something to what you said.  Right now both boys feel a little extra warm and have had some softer than they should be BMs today.

As usual, thanks for the help guys!

  • I hope they feel better soon and that the food chaining helps! Our son's feeding therapy (with a lot of food chaining) was at our house during lunchtime once a week for 6 months, and his NT twin definitely benefited from it, too. ;)
